To What Do You Owe Your Happiness Today?

cooked filet mignon tonight for wife, her best friend, and I tonight. FM is a cut i don’t normally care for because it’s always tough and chewy. the last time I had it was at the bachelor party I went to in Vegas last April before we went to the Sphere to see the Grateful Dead. man that fuckin city is so overrated, and christ that night in particular… ugh. that story is for another day.

anyway I figured out why I’ve never had good filet mignon from a restaurant kitchen. any rare occasion I’ve eaten it at restaurants, they over do everything to it… over season, over cook, and over sauce. like why should you even need sauce. I got 3 decent cuts from savemart for $15, seasoned them with a rub and let them sit out for an hour (getting to room temp I think is an essential and a commonly skipped step). oven at 400℉, seared them on cast iron on gas range for ~3 min each side then skillet in oven on the upper shelf for 9 min. came out medium rare, brown edges with perfect pink middle. tbh i haven’t had steak that good, and was under $20.

cow might’ve been engineered with fifteen utters and was probably fed mcdonalds burgers and screamed at its whole life but I dunno, at least its death brought some joy to the life of 1 human (me). it’s nice to honor the animal with a great experience and there’s something really gratifying about cooking a piece of meat way better than some restaurant’s kitchen ever would.

I went to the water park with my family!

(Also I finally figured out how to get this light mode. It feels like sunlight =^)

How’s that going? I’ve tried to do this many times in my life and failed every time. I’m hoping you have more success than me!

There was exhaustion and severe migraines at first, but they have since subsided. In order to satiate my craving for it, I’ve been drinking caffeine-free soda. It isn’t an easy thing to quit, but I’ve done so in the past already, just not permanently.

I had 4 fresh, hot, and crispy cinnamon doughnuts for breakfast this morning, and I don’t regret a second of it.

It’s also crazy how amazing water is… Like, seriously. I think I’ve drunk about 3 liters so far and there’s still a good 3 or 4 hours left in the day.

Finally bit the bullet and bought a new laptop! My old Asus died five years ago, and I’ve been using an old MSI that was graciously gifted to me by a member of this forum, but it was time.

I picked up an 18’ Asus TUF with 64 ram and 4tb hard drive for less than what I was looking for with only 16gb and 1tb hard drives.

I’m looking forward to dabbling in music again. This laptop was always a bit too slow for heavy music production. And now I can finally play Scorn lol (Steam Deck doesn’t cut it).

I have an ASUS TUF too! It’s an A15… So a little old now.

Mine’s lacking a bit in overall storage, but I bought the one with more battery (It’s my school laptop as well, so go figure.) Ryzen 9? What graphics card?

I actually ended up cancelling that one and going for an Asus ROG with a better graphics card that was on sale for the same price lol! 16 incher with an easily removable back panel for RAM and SSD upgrades (which I will be doing a bit later). It’s an RTX 5070 ti.

My last ROG was bought for the same price 11 years ago with a GTX 870m, and I thought that was the shit, so this should be pretty good. :+1:

5070 TI is sick… I’m still on a 4060. Does it still have the same RAM and SSD or did you have to sacrifice a bit of it? Guessing so considering your next post. Is that going to be your new music making device or do you have a separate PC for that? Questions, questions,

My laptop has the ability to be upgraded with RAM and SSD too, and considering my old TUF gaming laptop shat itself (screw wasn’t installed correctly, shorted the motherboard 1 day out of warranty :moai:) I should probably put those parts to use.

I’m already saving up for a Macbook Pro, regardless. Better graphics..? No, but the workflow’s gonna be so much better. Not to mention those internal speakers :exploding_head:

Computers are my element… Probably the only reason I’m not doing IT/Microelectronics in University is because little kid me decided to play an instrument.

This will be my new music making device. If I play games I just plug it into my TV, so the screen size doesn’t matter (opted for a less flashy screen. 60 FPS at 4K is good for me).

I’m used to the smaller screen size now (I have reading glasses lol). I don’t plan on overloading the SSD right away since I want to upgrade it, so that’ll wait a bit (don’t want to mess with all the serials and licenses twice).

Most of my storage space is filled with old music files dating back 20 years, which I’ll probably keep on externals until the need arises.

I plan on keeping my current laptop in case I run into compatability issues with stuff. It’ll take a bit to get everything up and running again, but I think I made the right purchase.

Just checked, and there’s an open SSD slot for more storage, so I got the 4tb Samsung EVO Plus after some research.

Fuck it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Fuck yeah - now you can install Doom: Dark Ages 40 times if you wanted to

Probably won’t be an issue, but reinstalling and configuring all of your stuff will probably take you a VERY long time :grimacing:

I still haven’t gotten all of the stuff I had on my old laptop up an running again, but I expect to get ANOTHER one in a couple months time. (That will make 5 laptops  )

What are you people doing? I make a list of all the software I use and install that day one. You can blitz it in a few hours. Especially if you use default install locations for everything. I fought that for a while, but I’m a convert now, especially with VST3. Shit just works when you don’t have to add custom folders to your VST search path.

I also beta-test software for a few companies, so I’m used to having to uninstall and reinstall stuff constantly. I just sit down and spend half an hour getting up to date on all my betas every few weeks.

I’m with you. No idea why it’d take much time at all. I usually push Ninite for the easy stuff then it’s just a matter of grabbing my installers for the rest. I cottoned long ago to making a list of installed software before I format so I have a list to work from and don’t miss stuff.

Amen.

It’s mostly just the motivation, but I’ll get to the point where i just wanna hammer everything out. I’ve lost a lot of old VST’s that I can’t find anymore. And some of these old serial numbers and everything will take some sleuthing (Hello Kontakt lol). I lost a lot of presets with the old crash as well.

I don’t really like sitting down for “boring computer stuff” these days since my time is limited, but it’ll get done.

I’m not too worried about it, but it’ll be a learning experience since I can’t jump right into all my old stuff anymore and haven’t been able to for a half a decade, but I did get a new interface for my mic last year in preparation.

I do have Ableton up and running on my current laptop, but like I said, it’s way too slow.

I had a shitty week, to the point where I just layed in bed and slept when I wasn’t working (to be fair, i work 13 hour days at minimum), but I went out and about with my friend today for a bit, and also finished Streets of Rage while I was waiting for my laptop to arrive.

And arrived it has! Everything checks out. Been futsing about with the settings and learning Win 11. When I went to figure out how to remove the back plate to install the extra SSD I bought, the fucker just popped off with a push of a button, which made me say “Ho-lee shit,” out loud lol.

I don’t think I should be happy, to be honest, I’m working at a KFC in a shopping center - getting paid minimum wage. That’s okay though, because I NEED that sweet sweet Macbook pro…
