The Movie Thread

Last week I watched Bring Her Back without knowing anything about the movie besides the poster. Best horror movie I’ve seen in years, and I ended up grabbing the 4K.

I highly recommend it for fans of horror, but it is a bit intense.

These images are stunning. The pic at the bottom looks like a bad Midjourney render lol with legs all over the place, like the covers I made for the IDMf christmas music release that never happened… which reminds me I should resurrect that before the middle of december this year loool

IDMf ho-ho-holiday jam (NSFW):

jesus have mercy,legs for days

looks like some fucked up serial killer victim-display crime scene

yes, that’s a good place to sleep

no idea

wtf

ok im done

That movie started to ‘hook’ me in but didn’t deliver like I was hoping, I am very hard to please in the horror genre though.

This movie was dope. I’m a huge Garland fan, Annhilation is in my top movies

It’s a great movie. The last pic is part of quick sequence of shots that lasts about a second that struck me when I was watching it. It’s definitely not a midjourney render lol. It’s a great movie, and I recommend it for you and your lady!

Dang, really? I went into it blind, and thought it was great. Did you watch Weapons? Everybody seems to love Weapons at the moment, but I thought it was just okay.

Ex Machina is top five for me. Annihilation is also up there. I haven’t watched Devs yet, but I shall eventually.

I want to watch weapons, heard nothing but good things so far, kind of put tv/movies aside lately.

Devs was forgettable imo. His least desirable project, cool visuals but pretty slow burner which in this case doesn’t help. Other than that I love all movies he’s directed, yes including Civil War, that shit was awesome. Well… ‘men’ was pretty lame but I don’t count that.

Maybe I’ll have to re-watch devs and see if my minds changed on it now that it’s been a while.

Worst movie I’ve watched in ages… I’m not going to say more, because spoilers & all that. It seems that a lot of the hype was riding on the trailer (I didn’t see it), from what I gathered in the IMDB reviews Also, after they got past the hype, many people wrote reviews that align much more closely with the real value of this movie.

It seemed like it could be a bust, that’s why I decided to wait until it was out of theater. Obviously I’ll give it a watch for myself but the insight is good from both you guys going into it and to temper expectations.

I don’t really have high hopes for almost any movies anymore. Love Garland films, Fincher is still very good, not as legendary as before but still top notch, few other directors get me excited but most things are fucking worthless anymore.

Man, I feel like reviewers don’t like this one so much, and honestly, I hated it when I first watched it years ago (probably in glorious 420p, if we’re being honest), but holy shit. Upon rewatching, I was totally blown away, even though I already knew “the twist”.

The part where he goes to the bar and starts to see his entire life flash before his eyes and you realize he’s in the middle of the dying process is such a fucking tearjerker moment. I don’t think another movie has ever done that to me so hard before, but I’m also a puss.

TL;DR, shit made me cry. 10/10 Goslings

I got my Australian 4K import of The Neverending Story in today, complete with the original poster art, which I always prefer. Been hard to get the American cut on 4K, and this was pretty expensive, but mannnn that movie still slaps.

That Artax scene sets the tone early on saying that this movie doesn’t fuck around. I still really like the message in this movie. I don’t like the last couple minutes and always end it on the line, “Then my first wish is……"

Dude, I just saw that one a few months back with my family for the first time. What a TRIP. Very meta in it’s storytelling. Great piece to add to the collection.

I was actually thinking how interesting it would be to a first time viewer. Also a rare film where a character looks directly into the camera and it works.

The matrix movies are shit.

John wick movies are better.

I first saw Hard Boiled (Hong Kong John Woo movie from ‘92) on VHS back in high school, and always wanted to watch it again, but every single release was notoriously shitty. A 4K FINALLY came out, and to my surprise, I didn’t like that movie at all upon a rewatch.

I thought it was a slog. I was all pumped to watch it, but it just didn’t click with me, and I found the sub translation a little stilted (or maybe that was the dialogue in general). Taking advantage of Amazon’s return policy since it was a 50 dollar disc. Still glad it’s out there with a great print for once for the peeps who like this movie.

On a positive note, Jacob’s Ladder was just released on 4K, so I grabbed that and thought the movie was even better than the last time I watched it, which was 12 years ago or so.

Some things (music, movies, books) that left a big mark on you during your teenage years are sometimes better kept as good memories than revisited. IMO what’s aging the worst is usually movies. A lot of them go from dated to cringe nowadays.

I rewatched Jacob’s Ladder recently and thankfully it was still most excellent :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I watched Mullholland Drive with my lady last week. She wanted me to see it since it’s her favorite movie, means a lot to her, informs her worldview, etc.

I won’t say this to her, but it was “meh”. IDK maybe its an acquired taste because it’s a David Lynch movie, but the whole thing felt really disjointed and lacked a satisfying conclusion IMO. Not the first time I’ve felt that about a movie, but this felt like an egregious offender. Could have been 2-3 separate movies IMO. Not sure what mixing them up together and not really finishing any of them is supposed to accomplish.

Looks like you’re not familiar with David Lynch’s work at all :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Big Lynch fan here.

First let me say that, while it is an excellent film, I never understood why Mulholland Drive is so highly rated and considered his best work by the vast majority of people (industry professionals, movie critics, fans, etc.). If you ask me, it is a bit of a rehash of Lost Highway, which is a masterpiece & superior to MD in practically every angle.

Of course, everything Twin Peaks is fantastic, and Fire Walk With me is another masterpiece. Somehow, it got panned by critics for reasons that still don’t make much sense to me to this day…

Anyway, Lynch wrote his films like dreams. They are highly metaphorical, not linear, seemingly disjointed and open to interpretation. So your confusion at this feeling like 2-3 films in one is likely because you expected something more linear or explained/connecting in a more obvious fashion at the end. As it is, the parts are connected. It’s how one interprets them that differs. Additionally, if not confusing enough, there are lots of “clues” hidden throughout that refer to other David Lynch films. More prosaically, it’s also a critic of the Hollywood of those times.

Now, the thing that baffles me is you saying Mulholland Drive “informs her (your girlfriend’s) worldview”. Er…what???

Maybe ‘informs her worldview’ is a bit strong, but she told me that she really feels like she’s been through some of the stuff that the main character has dealt with in terms of feelings of betrayal, things not going as planned, plans not living up to expectations all opposite of the dream like state of what things could have been if they had just gone right.

Which, fair enough, who among us hasn’t had to deal with dickheads or disappointment in our lives? And blames them for us not getting the things we want. She works in science, so she’s looking at it from the lens of papers she wasn’t included on, ideas that weren’t taken seriously by her colleagues, etc.

Anywho, she wants me to show her a movie that similarly explains me. I’m mostly figuring out how to make Hot Rodd explain me so I can just watch something funny this weekend.
