The Hardware Megathread

Of all the cool pieces you listed, the Mellotron is the star to me. Just what a cool/weird/unique piece of gear.

My EP got played in that setup and I was pretty happy to hear that the mix translated well!!!

Well after talking it up I hope you like it!

We think it will fit in well with the style of music we make, it’s a lot of fun to program, we’re just getting the hang of getting interesting sounds out of it

Probably going to use this and model cycles as the basis for the weird witchtronica thing we’re doing with a friend

Also just realised we can route external audio through it and use it as a filter and distortion fx so may play with that as well. It’s definitely an interesting bit of kit

I rarely record it (because it’s pretty easy to replicate in software) but a solid 50-60% of my music is written on my Rev2 using presets. Kinda sounds like the Moog One is the super duper version of that. I always thought of it as a $4000 upgrade option to my Rev2, not a $6000 synth.

The Police Pack is still coming, I just need motivation and also some way to get it out of Studio One :joy: I cut everything up as I was listening to it and thought I could just drag and drop out of it when I was recording it. Nope… in the song folder is a bunch of long samples of mostly silence (ie the pre-chopped clips)

so I think I am going to export it all as one long ass audio file and use something else to cut it into pieces. New process for me, yay learning…

I found countless bass and guitar clones (and originals), and effect clones, knockoffs, and copies of all kinds on Ali Express.

Not a single synthesizer, and I can’t figure out why. I found some interesting MIDI controllers, and a few over-priced Korgs showed up, but… not a single cloned synth. I did find smrt media cards (remakes?) that were pretty cheap and might be worth trying in old gear vs buying increasingly pricey old ones on eBay.

Anyway, just an oddity to me as I’ve never delved into the dark pit of despair rabbit hole that is Ali Express.

The most hilarious find was a Behringer V-Amp clone :joy:

Wow, I don’t know how I missed his channel. Definitely a huge fan of him and SP from that time, and there’s a goldmine of info on there. Thanks for the heads up on it.

Heads up everyone, for the US it seems Moog is doing a Valentine’s sale, pretty good deals. I’m not going to decide today, but I was considering these two myself:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Matriarch--moog-matriarch-semi-modular-analog-synthesizer-and-step-sequencer

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GRANDMother--moog-grandmother-semi-modular-analog-synthesizer-and-step-sequencer?Searchbutton=Search

I also saw the smaller semi-modular (DFAM, Mother-32, Subharmonicon) and monosynths (both Subsequents and Minitaur) on sale.

I see IK raised the price of their already expensive X-series of pedals from $300 to $330. FFS -_- Yes, I know they warned people, but at this point I’m kinda tired of constant price-raising that’s 10 and 20% chunks at a time…

And we all know this shit won’t go back to normal once life is normal. They’ll keep the fucking prices right where they are…

Musician’s Friend has them for $50 off atm, $280 and you can probably get another 15% off with a President’s Day coupon code (newsletter probably)

You can more or less demo them via Amplitube CS (free) for a trial period.

Caveat, have never used these pedals or the software though apparently I got the X-Drive software for free due to being on their newsletter.

X-Time

The way things are going in the US I sincerely don’t expect to be able to afford new gear or any gear at some point in the next five to ten years. Now, I’m not good at shopping sales at the grocery store and, yes, I’m buying some kind of spirits or beer every third trip or so but I seriously can’t get out of the store for less than $100 anymore. Pre-pandemic I could go and pick up stuff to make dinner, some extra bits to fill in the gaps in the pantry and a sixer or a fifth and get out for $70ish dollars. Now I’m lucky to come in under $100 even without booze.

Here in the UK some fucking Baroness told us that new generations can’t get enough money for a deposit to buy a home because they spend it all in Netflix, gym subscription and avocados…

Which makes me really happy my gear lust is under control.

Oh that is one of the favorite shitty opinions of conservative people my parents age here.

We’ve basically accepted that we’re never going to be able to buy a house however much we save so shiny synth toys it is

When Tim Shoestring reviews it’s like the world is on his shoulders, I find it funny how serious he is,
He’s just reviewed the Pro 2 and in his serious way he spent the first 10 minutes explaining why he’d never bought one earlier and this was because he already had lots of mono synths, yet he didn’t explain what changed his mind to go ahead and get one  oh Tim get a grip.
