The Hardware Megathread

To be honest, once the Elektron workflow clicks, it’s fantastic.
Except the Oktatrack or file management on the Rytm.

OMG dont get me started on the RYTM. i have 3 of them that I tour with and i have to continually update patches so that all 3 are synced and its a god damned pain in the ass.

Yeah, we definitely fell in love with the workflow on the cycles, though we probably should sit down and learn some sound design tricks with it

I would have immediately said yes two years ago. I haven’t used mine for a very long time, but I do remember it fondly.

Although I am also of the opinion that Make Noise reached way too hard for their whole “no coast” concept; This thing is about as f’ing west coast as it comes lol. Like, seriously, one of their arguments was a west coast portion of it that doesn’t use a specific component associated with its “west coast” counterpart, but it operates like the actual thing anyway :eyes: Come on… (I forget which portion specifically; it might be the LP gate or something)

It’s still a really cool semi-modular if you don’t mind not having a filter. Or you could even pair it with a smol monotron if you really want a filter.

I got it from Perfect Circuit where for only $50 more I got it with a $100+ Korg SQ-1; probably save more if you wait for a deal/coupon time. I haven’t checked used prices for either piece of gear, however.

…I’m watching a music creator (Benn Jordan) make microscope slides out of pond scum and stream it live.

This is my life.

Edit And now we’re discussing the futility of life as he thinks about disposing the samples vs putting them back outside XD

Edit 2 I’ve been watching a tardigrade struggle against a bubble for… 30 minutes? 45 minutes? XD

I saw a bit of that

I had one and loved it, even made some videos of it https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpH-1y5xkoKBSptWPuxhZ1DXDlmv3efp3 but ultimately sold it as I couldn’t find a place for it in my workflow, its sound just didn’t sit in my music.
But a beautiful meditation synth.

Replying to myself after rewatching my videos:
I’d buy one.

Anybody heard of https://whyp.it yet? Free audio sharing but… what is paying for it? They do have “pro” plans on their roadmap, and it looks like things uploaded eventually expire in 7 days.

wasn’t that how we transfer worked, free version, the uploads were not permanent

There’s a donations page. Upon reading, this is made by a producer and friend who has a facebook music production group, so between the website being small enough and the users being generous enough, that website might be paid for fully by users.

Anyone got any recommendations on inexpensive synths with hands on control, the micron sounds fantastic but the minimal controls and lack of logical midi support is frustrating

Also 5000 post

You pretty much have the Micron, with your Miniak. It’s basically the same synth in a different body. Numark owns both companies. As for inexpensive hands on it would depend on what your after. If you want a mono, then any of the Behringer models would be worth a look, or the Bass Station 2.

MicroBrutes are fun. Knob per function, pretty versatile, though as far as MIDI, iirc its MIDI DIN In is just for note playing and it does not have a MIDI Out DIN.

JFC these things are $350 now!? They were $300 new and I think I got mine for like $230. I actually don’t even remember when they were discontinued, sort of just assuming they had by now.

Well, there goes my idea. I don’t know if I can recommend a MicroBrute for $350+ :woman_shrugging:t2: But I suppose it’s out there if that’s in your price range; I’m not a price-ologist and won’t go into a rant on the silliness of used gear pricing over the past several years even pre-COVID.

I agree with this and would add the Circuit Monostation though it seems to be out of production now. It has a brilliant built in sequencer. Monostation sound/synthesis options aren’t all that different than the BSII but the Monostation ends up being a little more aggressive sounding. You can even sequence a different patch per step.

Yeah we basically bought the miniak because we’d wanted an ion for the longest time, but could never afford the ion. It does sound really good, and the lack of control is pushing us to abuse the mod matrix more, but sometimes it’s just nice to be able to tweak a knob mid jam.

Bass station 2 does look interesting, and the afx mode looks like it could be fun for complex bass patches, probably sensible to look at some reviews on YouTube

Yamaha Reface CS
Knob per function, no presets.
Great synth.

Here’s some music made with just a CS

So if I rack up my Pro-1 I have room to setup my TD-3, iPad or maybe the RD-8. Currently working on like an ambient Jungle kinda thing. Thinking iPad as I currently am only sampling/resampling for pads/atoms/textures. I can’t see really using the TD-3 and also feel like a lot of early Jungle was sampling from rompers and the like. I do have the Korg M1 app which could fill that niche.

Thoughts welcome

I know the feeling, as I have a Micron and a Korg Prophecy. The Prophecy is like the Micron a PITA to programme. I was hoping Behringer would have done the BCR2000 remake that they teased ages ago, but meybe that’s all it was.
The Bass Station 2 has been out for a long time, so should be easy to pick up used, and they’ve been given updates.
