Teenage Engineering: The Apple of synthesizers.
Spent a few hours in the Rytm mkii, grey, not the hot black one.
I was expecting it to be more immediate in terms of sound design but its depth means I need to spend time learning it. The sequencer is the usual Elektron one, which I love, sampling via usb from the iPad was a joy and making kits from samples is a blast, like a bigger Digitakt. The synthesis part and the performance bits will need more studying. Expect a one/box track soonish.
Really curious about the aound design, and how far you can get away from that “analog drum” sound without getting into the sampler, especially with the FM machines.

I pre-ordered this since I’ve been wanting to try a MPE controller and the pitch bend per key seems really fun ![]()
Roli is such a cool company. Enjoy : )
also, @morphic did you use another name on the old forum?
Nope - as far as I remember, I never registered on the old forum. I just lurked from time to time.
that’s cool, sorry about the random question, I don’t even know who I thought you were LOL
That looks awesome! I think this should be perfect for everyone who didn’t like the Seaboard surface. If my baby boy finally destroys my LinnStrument I might switch to this one ![]()
I think I just found the perfect expressive sound design instrument.
Thomann Electric Kazoo Red
I feel really odd, but I think I hate the Analog Rytm.
I spent hours listening to the demos and comparing it to the ‘sound’ I usually go for and it seems like a perfect match, but since I received it (which frankly is not long) I struggled with getting any sound that made me go ‘yes, this sounds like Automageddon’, unless I was manipulating a sample. But for sample manipulation I could just use the Digitakt which costs less and has a few more sample editing options.
It’s the synth engines I struggle with, anything that needs to be bass heavy seems to be off and I can’t stop thinking I can get better sounds faster from the Model:Cycles.
Positive: I got it for real cheap so I can flip it for profit if I decide to.
I keep going back and forth on this. I have a MachineDrum, and it’s great but the sequencer is starting to show it’s age compared to say the Analog Four or Octatrack. I love doing drums on the Analog Four and keep thinking the RYTM would be a good fit, but everything I hear sort of sounds the same, or is sample-based. I don’t know, on paper it looks good but I’ve only heard one or teo demos that really made me think “this sounds great”.
Ship it over here for real cheap and I’ll give you my impressions.
If we lived in the same town I wouldn’t mind catch up for a coffee or three, unleash you on the Rytm and get your opinion, but distance is a bit of an issue at the moment…
That would be great! Alas… “the pond”
I’ve not had much time with the RYTM, but I’m intrigued.
I heard more than a few demos and YouTube videos that had that sound I’m looking for, but maybe they were more sample based…
Truth be told, it’s still initial impressions and I need to spend more time with it.
FWIW, I think I’ve always subconsciously gravitated back to samples for percussion.
Also, @Auto-meh-geddon, you win! My purple TD-3 is on back order until February!
Well I knew this was coming since last years NAMM but still its nice its finally arrived for us MPC and Force users… what’s up with Andy Macs pronunciation of “Engine” though? ![]()
On the Force there’s still a couple of bugs, mostly related to the labelling of the knows in multi mode, but the engines sound really good.
What annoys me in a positive way is that the reverb built in in the Air plug-ins sounds better than the standalone reverb effects. I hope new effects are next.
Or improved step-sequencer.
To be honest, the Force just keeps getting better.
This update also doesn’t help with my current Rytm conundrum…
I always thought the System-8 was pretty cool, just don’t have room for another keyboard that doesn’t even have aftertouch…
But yeah, you get Jupiter, Juno, and JX modes (all with 8 voices), plus a System-8 engine that has crazy sideband filters and striaght up FM options after some of the updates.
