BB128 - A minor Spring

Hello and welcome to Battle 128. I hope you all are having fine weather.
And - speaking of the weather, it is Spring In America, and that is the theme of this battle (the samples are also - in A minor, wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

The pack is here to download.

Alternately, I think my Dropbox linking works now; so, this may work:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/cnfruq0djbmnkni/IDMF_Battle%20Pack_128.zip?dl=0

Rules:

  1. Entry must be at least 3 minutes (unfinished or WIP welcomed )
  2. Invoke the feeling of Spring - and I mean sunshine and flowers, not the allergies.
  3. You must use at least one of the piano chord progressions and one of the piano melodies provided. However, you can chop and rearrange them however you want.
  4. Yes; you may use your own sounds; no limit but legal.

Start Date: 10 am PTD April 16th, 2021
End of entry window: 10 am PTD - April 26th, 2021
Voting Start: 10 am PTD - April 27, 2021
Voting Ends/Winner prepares next battle: 10am PTD May 1st 2021 (or TBA)

Note: All audio files were bounced from purchased VST’s. The loops are my original compositions (with the exception of the drum pattern). 24bit, 44.1k, normalized…

And, I’ve included a bunch of midi files.

I’m excited to hear the results!

Beat Battle General Rules:

Beat Battles take place over the course of two weeks. For the first ten days, users will have to arrange, upload, and post their track to this forum. After this, the next three days users cast their votes for their favorite track. At the end of this, the winner will be announced, and they will then become the next Beat Battle host and will have one day to construct a battle pack and begin the next Beat Battle.

Unless otherwise stated, the only sample/audio sources you may use for your song must come from the battle pack.

In the event of a tie, the battle host will decide the winner.

Ps: All skill levels welcome. Feel free to leave a blurb of feedback to the submitters. Please keep feedback constructive and don’t be dicks to each other.

Brilliant. I like it. Will hopefully be dropping the sample pack in one of my samplers soon <3

This will be fun, but challenging as I’ve not done anything with a laidback style in a little while. Might want to get some others interested in this as well if you know who might want to participate @relic @7asid @amongthestars @TVMcC @Auto-meh-geddon

BTW what are the samples with (freeze) in the name @orangeslice I’ve wondered what the difference between samples with freeze in the name and those without were.

I’ll see if I can squeeze in sometime to muck about, thanks for thinking about me.

best of all

It doesn’t necessarily need to be laid back - just cheerful and Spring-ee, lol. I included midi so you could use Vital or something else with your own sounds. At the least, use one of the melody audio files and one progression audio file and chop them if you’d like.

The “frozen” samples come directly from an original MIDI composition. It’s just Ableton’s naming convention: https://youtu.be/FWvgsar2BXo

The drum rhythm was exported directly from Superior Drummer, and the FX’s I made using resampling; so, they weren’t “frozen”.

Besides that, no difference.

Oh ok! Thanks for explaining. :]

You’re welcome!
It’s my first time making a sample pack; so, I’m also excited!

Hahaha @relic Noice!

Yes, really appreciate the midi. I like manipulating that most of all along with adding to it @orangeslice

Welp I’m not completely finished with it and unfortunately my work disappeared after I completed it…

The only things I can remember about this is that I manipulated the midi files almost all of the chord progressions. Some of the melodies and arps and added to it to create the beautiful melody in the track. I then downloaded some vocals and spliced them up in sampler and got them to how you hear them. I created my own swells and risers from the samples. I added on to the sample drums I added in with using tapestop on each one of the chops to create that glitchy funky and chilled out feeling.

I’m hoping that my computer backup that happens every night has saved me the time in creating a whole new track. It won’t be that hard, just tedious is all. …ugh… :unamused:

Nevermind I found it by going to the Window option and clicking open main window and it popped back up again so now I don’t have to start all over again. Just very strange…Sometimes logic can be touchy

If taken in the right context, but yes. That’s funny! You humor this android. lol

Phew! I’m glad you didn’t lose your project!

Here we go…

It’s an upbeat piano house track that I made by mostly over-processing the samples, and adding plenty of my own. Here’s what I did with the given samples:

A Minor Prog 01: I chopped this up to make the main piano chords that you hear throughout the song. Lots of eq, some resampling to make it sound more grimy, and some saturation, reverb and compression to pull it all together.

A Minor Mel 02: I chopped this up as well to make a melody near the end. It’s much less processed, to keep more of a real-piano feel.

Lo-Fi Geet Peet: This is the closed hi-hat. I chopped it really short, used the “Paranoia Mangler” plugin, and added a lot of distortion. Somehow it all worked out and I got a nice shaker/hat

Hi-Hat_Close: I used this as… (drum roll) a hi-hat! I bitcrushed it and added some noise and that did the trick.

A Minor Arp 04: I just mostly kept this the way it was, with some eq and compression. I used it as my chords and just to fill out the mix a bit.

The kick, clap, vocal chops, bass, and FX are originals by me. Hope you enjoy!

I’m not officially competing, but I have been messing about with an arrangement. I haven’t figured out all the pieces and how I’m putting it together, but here’s an early bit I’ve thrown together.
