Hm, I thought that Police Department (PD) and Additive would be higher up the list to be honest. Maybe grouped with wavetable and FM? Dunno, they were just some of the first things I learnt.
Buchla is about my limit, but the CS80 is no walk in the park either. I don’t know half the rest of the things below that.
I’d put them a level below FM if we have to stick to the tier list archetype, but if we’re being really honest I’d put all of them on the same level in terms of actual difficulty to learn. They just do different things and have different strengths and weaknesses.
Like, Phase Distortion’s strength was making similar enough sounds to Yamaha in the 80s without requiring a licensing fee. If you want a slightly off-brand 80s FM sound, then there ya go. Downside is you have to learn a variation of 80s FM, and I’d rather die than do that.
lol that entire thing is horse shit. but funny.

I always took those iceberg thingys as most-common to least-common, not a ranking of complexity or difficulty or whatever.
Given that, I think the pic makes some sense - you don’t see a lot of people directly using additive synthesis verses, say, Serum lol. Phase distortion is really a Casio thing and I don’t think the ol’ CZ is particularly common nowadays. For whatever reason, Buchla ended up more common than Serge in West-Coast, I guess people are scared of banana jacks despite them being a better thing in a lot of cases (cue VHS vs Beta argument).
I’d agree if this was a difficulty list or similar, we’d need some major rearranging.

I think it says a lot about how much time I waste working on tools for making music instead of actually making it that I’m more familiar with the bottom half than the top. Like wtf is Edison? Or Directwave? Or Toxic Biohazard? Is Halion just a funnier version of Lion? Are these things I should know? Am I missing out? Goddamnit, I could have been Skrillex by now…
Halion is basically Steinberg’s version of Falcon (if you can call it that) and everything else is just FL Studio tools
. I forgot to put gross beat in there, too. lol
Very different processes thrown around (for making music), I see.
I bet mine is a lot less exciting than you guyseses

I love the guy who makes these comics
they always end with “oh no” and it’s great.
I know. I have 2 signed prints from Alex Norris ![]()
I am glad he’s finally done with the lawsuits that crippled his work and overtook his life the last 6 years or so. Long story short, he was going to release a game with his oh no blob and the company tried to fuck him over and steal his copyright. He had to go through Gofundme to help him pay his lawyers’ fees. Madness from evil fuckers who thought he would fold just because they had the means to sue him.
