Ever since that Opsix they had on the wall at NAMM I’ve been pretty excited about it’s release.
Today YouTube are full of opsix demos.
On paper it looks awesome, but to be honest I’ve never heard one sound yet that’s caught my attention, I fell asleep watching that loopop lark, I’ve got cuckoo on now using the opsix whilst I type this message and he is boring the hell out of me too.
Most hardware today is recreating sounds from hard-synths made in 70’s-90’s. Not all. But most. If a collector has a big collection not a lot new there for them to oooh and ahh at. Doesn’t mean stop looking of course. Like most arenas, hardware doesn’t have a lot of innovators, just craftsmen. Some bloody good craftsmen here and there.
All though obvious, it isn’t something many people seem to be addressing. Like, I love that I can afford a reasonable proxy of many classic synths but I’d also like something new as well. I guess at some point it gets some complex you can’t make it a hardware synth that many people want to use. Like Serum in a box with enough buttons and knobs would probably come in at the thousands if had all the same functions and FX.
Maybe thati’s kind of why I’m an Elektron fanboy. They aren’t always innovating but the take familiar things and apply their magic to it and you end up with something a little different than the usual.
Dave Smith has released some interesting not quite recreations as well but nothing crazy different.
As I posted originally, they are great synths and so well made they are perfect for home defense. You hit an intruder with one of these and they will immediately lose interest in your silverware and raping your gophers.
Hahaha, I guess that is probably pretty accurate, ironically just having a conversation with someone about Access and how they should get off their asses and do SOMETHING new. Unless we missed it.
Is this new? It looks similar to something I’ve seen that’s like maybe 5 years old now? What is the actual name. I can’t tell with their fancy ass font lol
Oh ha sorry, it’s the Modor dr-2. I’d never heard of it before, pretty sure it’s brand brand new
There’s a few videos on their insta… I’ll leave it up to you guys to judge it though, ha. Think I still like the RYTM mk2 far more. Maybe it has a better price
If you aren’t looking strictly for analog drum voices, I’d look at the Digitakt as well. The sampling is pretty limited on the RYTM.
Back on track–OK, I know of the Modor. I’m looking at their home page and I remember the NF-1. OH I see, this is their drum machine. Sweet. Looks pretty cool.
Back to the RYTM, a quick glance tells me you are getting way more for your money on the RYTM. I will go out on a limb and say, without reading a description of the Modor DR_2’s sequencer you are getting WAY more bang for buck on the RYTM sequencer wise. Of course you’d have to consider what features you’d really use. Everyone is always barking about the probability triggers on Elektrons but I rarely use them (just as an example). Sounds cool on paper, but I rarely want random sounds popping off according to some formula I don’t understand.
Like I hate dissuade you from going Modor, but from a pure money vs. feature set perspective there are better options. I think they are similar in price.
