Gamers what games are you playing? :)

I bought a Switch 2 on my lunch break!

Why? No idea lol!

I never owned a switch and have only ever played Mario Party on friends’ devices. I want to play Mario Galaxy and Odyssey and some Zelda games. Emulation is finicky. Once I found out it outputs to 4K and gets 60 fps I was sold.

I need to finish Windwaker HD (emulated) before I play anything on it, though.

I just got my brother one (his birthday is next month and he’s in for a pleasant surprise). He wants to play Pokopia. I’ll probably get Donkey Kong for it in a few months. Super Mario Odyssey is great, I played all the way through it twice. Love almost all the levels in that one. Galaxy is amazing too, but I still have the original on Wii so no need to re-buy it here.

In news of what I’m actually playing, one of my acquaintences is moving and gave me his old 3DS because he’s trying to get an upcoming move into two pieces of luggage and he needs the space. He thought it didn’t work but I opened it up and used deoxit on the cart slot. Works perfect. Battery even seems to last decently.

He gave me some games for it too, mostly Pokemon (which I’ve played off and on for the last 20 years). I started a game of Pokemon Platinum because I’ve never done that one before. I miss some of the conveniences of modern pokemon games already, but so far it’s fine. For free it’s great.

Still working my way through Kingdom Come Deliverance II and Fallout New Vegas on my PS5 and my laptop respectively. Only issue I have with those games is finding time to play them. Mobile stuff is so much easier to pick up and play for a few minutes and make progress on. Kinda makes me wish I had kept that emulation handheld I bought earlier this year. BUT, you can mod a 3DS and get it to do most of the stuff that I’d use an emulation handheld for…

However SD cards got fuckin expensive because of the rampocalypse, which is what I’d need to store all the roms on. Not that I can’t afford it, it just feels shitty to spend $25 bucks on a card when I could have had 2-4x the capacity for half the price a year ago. Progress… (?)

Just set it up and ended up buying Galaxy. YIKES, I am not used to Nintendo first party prices. I’m just gonna buy one game at a time and play them before buying anything else. Got my wishlist made and really don’t want a whole lot which is good. I’ll use Steam and PS5 for other stuff (and my backlog is crazy huge with those). Gotta finish Wind Waker now before anything. Also picked up the D Brand switch kit because I fucking love their steam deck kit. First thing I do when quitting my evening job is drop a bunch of cash on shit I don’t need!! Oh well.

Get that shit done so you can player Hyper Light Drifterrrrrrrrr!!!

Enclave HD was on sale on Switch

Despite the glitches and errors that happen along the way (I’ve come to accept that this is the way things are now), this is one of the best hack and slash adventures I think I’ve ever played. Still has that 2002 charm, too, despite a tiny bit of gloss on top in order to call it ‘HD’.

They really nailed the controls, too.

Finally finished Wind Waker after 20 something years (played the HD version) HOT TAKE, but I can see why I never finished that game. What a slog. Loved the overworld, but those dungeons suuuuck. Not much of a puzzle game fan. I would probably like Breath of the Wild, since it’s all overworld.

Playing Mario Galaxy on my newly acquired Switch 2 that I felt very guilty about splurging on, but damn, that game is fun as fuck. What a feast for the eyes.

I tried BOTW and I liked the over world ok, but there still plenty of puzzles/dungeons in there. Only Zelda I ever connected with was the OG. I need to sit down with a guide and just force my way through that one. After Hyper Light don’t worry. I just finished FONV this week so starting that one is on my list, possibly Sunday.

I’ll still give it a shot. I like (love) ICO and Shadow of the Colossus which are all puzzles, but normally I don’t like a game’s momentum stopping dead for longass puzzles.

As in the NES one? Fuck yeah lol. I still remember my dad coming home with that. I think that was the second NES game I had. I’m going to play Minish Cap as my next Zelda game, as that’s the other one I remember playing and not finishing. The 2D dungeons and puzzles don’t bother me at all. The 3D ones are so tedious, though.

Do it!!! That game is really special, in my opinion. If you like it, I recommend Solar Ash as well. just play it on a powerful PC as the framerate drops on the ports.

As for other game stuff:

I picked up Fading Echo which just came out on Steam, but haven’t tried it yet. It immediately won me over with the screenshots, and it was only 17 bucks.

Too hot out, so I stayed inside and finished The Minish Cap, which was a Zelda game I started, remembered liking, and never finished. The last dungeon was too long, but otherwise it was fun.

Just happened to be in my kitchen when this showed up, so I snapped a pic, since they kind of match.

I ended up really disliking that game. Put in seven hours then was done. It was ALMOST good.

Decided to play The Pathless, which was made by the same team as Abzu and Sword of the Sea. I passed it up because all the screenshots online just look boring and samey. They didn’t do the game justice, so here’s a couple screenshots I took.

I thought it was great for the 8 bucks I paid for it on sale. Recommended if you like exploration with easy puzzles and the Journey/Abzu aesthetic and even some Shadow of the Colossus vibes. Pretty awesome boss battles, too. I thought it was good stuff.

I almost shat myself when I remembered that Cave Story was a Switch exclusive for consoles. The Steam version has always been buggy even with the updates. Loaded up to a black screen the first time tried it on Steam Deck a couple years ago.

It’s a bit pricey at 30 bucks, but it appears to have only gone on sale twice in the last ten years on the Switch, so I bit the bullet and grabbed it. A small price to pay to FINALLY have a stable version of one of my favorite games ever.

It was the one game I almost bought a Switch for back in the day, so I’m glad I could add it to my collection. Totally forgot about it.

Started and finished an easy playthrough (no secret ending) with OG graphics and “Remastered” soundtrack setting (there’s a few choices) this morning. I still love that game.

Cave Story is seriously awesome. I think there’s weirdly a Wiiware version, but I don’t think it had the updated graphics.

Yeah, I remember that I was always waiting for it to leave Nintendo devices but it never did. I personally really dislike the updated graphics, so I’m glad they have the option to keep it retro.

I had a migraine today, so I’ve just been in bed and started his other game Kero Blaster just to play for a bit (played it a few years ago) aaaaaand I ended up finishing it lol.

My son just beat Zeromus in FFIV. Gotta say, that was pretty hard. We had to level up for hours before finally beating that guy… Great game though, comes directly after VI and VII in my personal FF ranking and was great to revisit.

His reading skills are getting better, too. Next one to beat is Chrono Trigger…

Fuck yeah. That music is the best. That game was pretty much my favorite game at the age of 11 and still remains so. It raised the bar a bit TOO high back in the day since I was always like “Yeah, but in Final Fantasy 2, you go to the frickin’ MOON.” lol

What version did you play? There’s so many now. The FF pixel remasters have QOL improvements that help with the grind, and an improved translation (especially with FFIV if it’s the old SNES version you played). If your son is learning how to read, the old translation might actually be preferable.

I remember being PISSED that my dad progressed through the game wuthiut me lol. I printed out the old SNES script with a dot matrix printer when I was 13 and used to draw the Four Fiends instead of listening to my math teacher back in grade school lol

Did your son like it? Was he shocked by Kaine’s betrayal in the sealed cave? That game gets points for brevity. There’s always something happening.

Yeah the music is awesome. Funny thing is my son suspected that we would be going to the moon the first time he saw it through the telescope

We played the Pixel Remaster on Steam. Pretty good I would say. I think I know what you mean with regard to the old translation - I noticed with regard to FFVI that the old English version I always played as a kid was much, much simpler to read for a kid compared to the new German translation because of “old tongue” words and phrasing. The old translation was just very “basic”. But it was ok.

I took extra care not even to level up without my son so he wouldn’t be pissed at me hehe. I remember one time I progressed through a game without a friend I was playing it with at the time (the SNES Zelda) and I think he never forgave me lol…

My son really liked it. But I think he wasn’t really shocked at the betrayal. I think he absolutely hated Kain since that guy argued to kill Rydia in the beginning :scream:

What I really like about the game is that you can’t just change the characters to whatever you like. Rosa is a much stronger healer than Cecil no matter what you want and how much you level up. Rydia is the only one with summons and powerful attack spells after Tellah dies and so on… In FFVI, when you level up and get Espers and magic such as Ultima, everyone becomes a badass mage…
