Another thread about edm

Right so im trying to make edm but i suck at it because of my song structure and style.

The sound design is part is easy…for me…

I know music theory…but

Im just too basic when it comes to melodies…
Some of the edm stuff ive made is just not compelling.

No troll…

Why am i trying to make edm…

Because “the obstacle is sometimes the way”

If you know you know.

:slightly_smiling_face:

So any have tips about making edm?

Not dubstep…that i feel like ive mastered…

Moreso thinking about complextro and martin garrix and zedd style tracks…

Do not mention deadmau5 ffs…lmao

IDK, if anything, I find the easy part of making EDM is melodies. It’s usually pretty basic chord progressions that have been used time & time again, as they are proven to make folks dance.

Watch some youtube videos. Come on Bro. Query something like "fl studio edm tutorial "

It’s all well and good to watch some random tutorial, but perhaps @bfk prefers interaction and open discussion with humans.

I don’t have any contribution to EDM

Also, deadmau5.

Yes, i could write something about topic but i will make it later . Let’s say in 2 weeks.

Skrillmau5…

Make 4x4 pattern kick snare hat
Add some bass
Add melody
Dublicate everything and try to develope your 4 bars to 150 bars
Song’s done.

It’s not a recipe. Making music for me is not like everyone else talking about like music is like cooking. It has nothing common with cooking,

I can write something like this but you can read this article by yourself @bfk How to Make Electronic Music: The In-Depth Guide to Becoming an EDM Producer 🔥

What type of EDM-

I can DEFINATELY give you tips for making hardcore, but for more dance type shit I have less clues. Not none, but less.

Hot take, deadmau5 makes so-so music.

Something like a yeah yeah yeah complextro remix…from zedd i believe…idk…

I dont listen to much edm…

But there are a few songs that ive heard that i like that i am unable to identify 4 real…

The high tempo kawaii anime shit is so damn annoying…

Theres probably some bangers but im too lazy to pay for spotify…

Pepas from farruko is fucking fire though…imo.

Yeah, I agree, J-core/Hyperpop are just too annoying sometimes. (Most of the time.)
Also, I don’t bother paying for Spotify, the ads aren’t that bad.
When you say Electronic Dance Music to any average person they’ll either think of some strange 80’s/90’s song, or a massive Moombahton/Melbourne Bounce song.
Here’s two guides if you really want to learn all the bajillion genres:

It really depends on the genre for the structure, I guess.

Think i found it

I’ll have to find sometime to listen to it, but it looks like (from all the sources I can find) that it’s a bass house song. I will probably be wrong until I listen to it, lol

I don’t know, it’s useless to talk about making music. You need to watch how someone does it. I’ve watched thousands of video tutorials on edm

Early lessons from Sonic Academy come to mind.

Eh, having composed music before, listening to a whole lot of popular (insert genre here) usually gives ideas about how that genre works… it changes depending on people though; not everybody works the same.

That website is formatted so poorly and is basically just another producer with the typing version of verbal diarrhea trying to give away a free book, but really wants to tell you that you need to pay him for his 1-on-1 lessons. No shmuck is going to read that 10,000 word single page blog. Here, I had ChatGPT summarize it in 300 words for you so you know it’s bullshit. I’ve even translated it into Cyrillic, you’re Russian right? :grimacing:

The document, written by Sam Matla, is a comprehensive guide on how to make electronic music, particularly aimed at beginners. It covers everything from the necessary equipment to the mindset and learning strategies required to become an electronic music producer.

Meaningful Insights on Making Music

Yes, the guide provides meaningful insights, particularly for beginners. Some key takeaways include:

  • You don’t need expensive equipment – A basic laptop, DAW, and headphones are enough to start.
  • Focus on structured learning – Matla emphasizes a “deliberate approach” to learning, which involves setting specific goals and practicing methodically rather than relying on random trial and error.
  • The importance of finishing tracks – Many producers struggle with completing songs, and Matla stresses the need to develop a habit of finishing music rather than endlessly tweaking unfinished projects.
  • The “pro mindset” – He draws from books like The War of Art to discuss overcoming creative resistance and staying disciplined.
  • The value of quantity over quality – Instead of perfecting one track for months, he recommends producing frequently to improve faster.

Repetition in the Document

Yes, the document is quite repetitive. Some recurring themes include:

  • Overstating the simplicity of starting – Matla frequently reassures the reader that making music is easier than they think.
  • The importance of finishing music – This point is mentioned multiple times across different sections.
  • The idea that expensive gear isn’t necessary – He repeats that beginners don’t need to invest heavily in equipment.
  • The promotion of his course – Throughout the guide, there are repeated mentions of the EDM Foundations course, encouraging readers to sign up.

Overall, while the guide contains useful advice, it is padded with repeated encouragement, analogies, and promotional content.
