A lot of edm seems like it is just saw wave variations with overtones and subtones layered against other waveforms
Well, it is true that most subtractive synthesis starts with a saw wave!
Especially the supersaw. Oh wait, that’s just too many saw waves.
I tried to edm with saw waves…and i failed…
Oh well nvm…seems like that i am unable to compose a decent edm track…it either sounds like adhd spaz music…or an avant guarde shit experiment or a horrible cross genre abomination…
Whatever…meh.
Not like the world is gonna miss out from an edm masterpeice from bfk…lol
Ill just music whenever…shrug.
Keep working on it!
A tip I’d like to share about a lot of modern EDM is that everything is WIDE and REVERBY
so don’t be scared to crank up those fx plugins!
I just released a UKG track, if you wanna see what I mean.
im the opposite i envy you man. im a big rhythm mofo and like intricicies and stuff
From my experiments in trying to make compelling edm…i guess the kick is more of a metronome…any other percussion are fills or accents… and all the melodies and sound design effect create ambiance and mood…
The structure is sort of like this
Intro bridge 1 verse 1 chorus 1 bridge 2 verse 2 chorus 2 drop/breakdown bridge 3 musical payoff moment verse 3 chorus 3 bridge 4 outro…
But
Im so used to making songs like intro section1 breakdown section 2 outro
And each or one of the sections has its own solo element
And what ive made in the past is a lot different from edms standard song structure…
I could spend some time applying executing some ideas in edms structure but…life stuff.
Edm can have solo elements but it has to follow the metronome kick drum element by the melodic phrases acting as an accent alongside the kick.
Writing this out so that i remember in case i want to make edm again and also to help super noobs.
Dont have to sidechain everything…
Just mix it properly…with each sound having a specific frequency space within the audible spectrum.
Sidechaining is a pretty good effect, NGL. It depends on what you’re going for, obviously, but I see it more of a creative choice than a need. Rolling off frequencies takes the same amount of effort as applying modulation, aka pretty much none (creative choices and tastes aside).
I think sidechaining can really ramp up the energy in an EDM track, though. I’ve even heard plenty of mallcore bands doing this (well, producers of) around the 2010s because the chugging of the guitars was just that disposable compared to the pounding kick drums . But even that was an interesting creative choice, IMO, even if it’s just seen as cheesy now.
Simplicity really seems to be key with EDM, not so much putting your vast knowledge of theory to work. Sometimes I think it’s more about simple chord progressions, basic leads, and making it as digestible as possible. But that in itself is an art form; one I haven’t mastered, either
Depends on the genre (as does everything)
I think that sidechain intensity should be directly linked to frequency
Like, sub MUST be sidechained with the kick, bass a little less, and then less and eventually just not from there on.
In hard dance everything is fully sidechained except for the kick because the punch NEEDS to be sharp and… Hard.
@bfk
detuned supersaws waiting for bro to use them as leads:
For the leads i have a habit of just uptuning the bassline patch and switching up some modulations and fx…
Its effective but lazy…
And sometimes it results in static not so compelling track composition.
I Gotta work on making complementary sounds in a musical context.
Listened to some edm today…
I think i picked up how to compose it so that my tracks are more compelling.
Did it tell you to use saw waves…?
(No, I won’t shut up. [Unless you really want me to].)
Basically you gotta fish out cheese curds from benwaas minge and sacrifice anything you find to deadmau5
Serious note i will do another edm attempt eventually
