I’ve recently gotten into Japanese alt idol (whatever that means) ano (ano-chan). What I find interesting about her songs (and specially the music videos), is how dense in information they are. A lot happens in a very short period. That’s my current guilty pleasure.
@ForPsyDef you might like Marino. I liked some alternative idol stuff when I lived in Japan, but most of it makes my ears bleed now. I still like this song, though. It’s bitchin’.
@Vlantis yes that song is very information dense, thanks for the recommendation. That’s what caught my attention on Ano, the way the songs are structured and how there is always something happening.
I was in Japan last year and found out about the idol industry, which I find interesting because there are thousands (literally) of this groups, which are kind of like microcelebrities with very small but loyal followings. The music doesn’t seem to be really the focus it seems the focus is the (perceived, read marketed) personality of the performers. I didn’t went to any shows and most of the music I checked out I didn’t like except for those songs by Ano, and she seems to have reached some more traditional level of success. Anyhow it’s quite a different approach to pop culture, it reminded me of that Momus rephrasing of the Warhol quote: “in the future everybody will be famous to fifteen people”, that seems to be how things work in that scene.
