Your favorite, most beloved sample

What’s your favorite?

It can be one you made… it can be one you pretend you made… it can be a millisecond in length or an hour in length… it can be one you recorded… it can be one you synthesized… it can be hilarious like your best fart… it can be serious and gripping. Like your worst fart. Any sample. You just have to love it, for some reason. What’s sitting in your sample library that you have some kind of creative/emotional attachment to?

You can also have more than one. Do you have a drum kit you gravitate toward? What projects of yours have you used it in? Has it been used in someone else’s work? Why’s it your fave?

Don’t just talk about it – let us hear it.

I’ll start with one of mine. It’s a field recording I did back in 2011/12-ish when a women’s Chinese choral ensemble visited on their US tour and the conductor gave us a sort of master class. Not being able to tell the future, I didn’t know I was going to love it so much. For whatever reason, I took out my Tascam and hit record. When they started singing, I felt their tonality and ability to sound so full and in unison moved me. I love it so much to the point that I use this sample often for lots of different things – currently concatenating wavetables. Here it is:

Share yours

Bonus points if you make is downloadable and someone else uses it in their stuff… then they should post it here! (PS mine is available for download)

Wow, that’s actually cool as shit. Seems like the potential basis for a killer drone track.

This one… was definitely not me pissing. I’m 25% sure it was just bathwater.

For some reason it seems like I can’t download yours from the embedded player, but maybe I need to disable some extensions. I’d love to do something weird with it for sure. Possibly involving piss

I cant find it right now sadly - I know its somewhere. Anyways - I was doing whippets in my buddies garage alone many many many moons ago and I had Caustic 3 on my phone at the time. Recorded my self rippin a huge ass whippet.

Once done I time stretched the hell out of it - ended up as a 4 minute sample of autechre style goodness. Ill find it someday.

so here’s the thing. I had this whole plan on how to prove you to be full of shit, and I realized, I just don’t really have that kind of time anymore. the plan was fun but it just took too much time, but I will hit you with a classic “posting is caring”, which means simply by the effort of you “proclaiming” in a thread titled “Your favorite, most beloved sampled” that you “didn’t have one”, that you do in fact have one, or did. you “don’t have feelings for samples”, stating that as if WE have feelings for samples…? Yeah, ya know, just by claiming you “didn’t have one”, I feel like you indeed had one, and something happened. So if you ever wanna talk about it, whatever you’ve been through with samples… Ok, I feel very open here and I want you to feel free to talk to us about it. i’m gonna skip trolling you this time because if a sample hurt you in any way, there are things we can do to make sure that sample gets what it deserves. my friend, it’s ok, we’re here. for you. Let us know what’s up.

N E Wayz,
Here is another one of my favorite samples… Dustin Hoffman from the film “Sphere”

“we are not alone… we are definitely not alone”

I used it on one of my first tracks, “How To Mic A Smile”. I still am tempted to use it all the time on things, and have in some kinds of ways, but never the way I did 20 years ago. I just love it.

Yes i have one. It’s the neptunes sound. All their tracks filled them samples

I can’t listen to their tracks anymore. It makes me shudder. That’s how long I’ve been listening to their tracks.

For example (synth’s riffs)
Noreaga - Superthug
Nerd- Lapdance
etc.     But I thought this topic was about samples that you have on your computer. But I don’t have their samples.

I think Pharrell is one of the best sampling artists of all time! I own NERD and Neptunes entire library. Good call.

Back when I was just starting out in music, I made a kick sample with a big water cooler jug stuffed with a towel, using the working side of a broken pair of headphones as a microphone placed inside. Thumped on the bottom in just the right way, amazed the headphone didn’t distort, the towel dampened the ping of the impact perfectly. The sample is locked in the vault somewhere but I ought to bring it out to share if I can find it.

I’m going to sight De La Soul, 3 foot high and rising every second aside from the lyrics is a well used sample and Prodigy (rave not the rapper :grimacing:). Their material has so many samples from great tracks. YouTube it

Do you think N * E * R *D will release another album soon?

I also had their entire discography, but I lost it 5 times. (reinstalling Windows, etc.)

I have a sample I’ve used since I started making hardcore many years ago,
It’s a sample of S.A.M saying “Mecha_Twitchy” and it’s the first tag I ever made. I also really love the Metal Pipe meme, it’s super great for pre-drops and just fills full stop.
Aside from that, Amen Break:
