The Hardware Megathread

Man, I just smoked a spliff like 30 minutes ago. I’ll take yer word for it. Got what I wanted in the end lol. I appreciate the explanation, I will re-read tomorrow.

I honestly was about to go largely DAWless until I bought my Tascam console. I wanted an older Roland or Yamaha multitrack recorder with motorized faders for recording and effects and an old PC strictly as a sequencer.

I still lust after a Roland VS2480 with the meter bridge, completely loaded to the gills, but I already know my attention span these days wouldn’t last long enough to make it a worthwhile purchase.

All processors since the Pentium Pro have PAE: Physical Address Extension. In other words, if the OS supports it, the processor can utilize up to 64GB. In fact, there are versions of 32 bit Windows 2003 and 2008 that fully allow up to 64GB of RAM. Linux, the BSD’s, and IIRC Solaris x86 supported it longer than Windows did, giving you access to large amounts of RAM if the hardware supported it.

I used it on one of my socket 478 P4 HT machines that had an ASUS mobo that supported 4GB of RAM. Had CentOS Linux running on it and the board was maxed out at 4GB and all of it was accessible by the OS.

I’d go along with your statement as headphones simply don’t move air like monitors

weeeee Bad Decisions :tm:

I got it cheap, but I think the wiring is bad. It crackles intermittently and occasionally mostly cuts out. Doesn’t seem like a bad speaker to me. Re-speakering it will cost almost as much as some whole-ass 4x10s on the market lol.

I’m going to pull the grill off tomorrow and have a peek at the wiring. I’ve been told Carvin wiring can be absolute trash.

Yeh that might be the case but its got ‘next album cover’ written all over it, even if its just a part of it

a crusty 20yo+ bass cab that’s been around the block a few times does look pretty hardcore

Apparently I can’t just swap speakers out of bass cabs and expect it to work, or at least work as expected. There is lots of nerding and math involved, and probably expensive software I don’t want to deal with…

Well fuck.

Got 2 expander kits and 1 VU meter kit in my thonk shopping basket (£515)

Then just before purchasing I’m questioning have I really got time to build these? I’d love to build them in the hotel room where I’m stopping during the week working but I assume soldering will set off the fire alarm.

When I’m home at the weekend do I really want to spend time in the garage ignoring the wife.

I guess pausing and asking these questions I’m actually growing up at last at the age of 50.

@Koldunya I have a Maschine+ question.
I think I remember that each pad of a bank can be either a sample or a synth.
Is that correct?
If so can I set up the pads so that pad 14 for example plays a C1 on massive and pad 15 a G1 on the same patch?

I compromised and just ordered 1 dynamics kit, I’ll get the other another time if the first one I build is ok.

+1
This is the quote of the week.

Correct. When you press the Pad Mode button, the right screen has the transpose options (octave +/- and semitone +/-), the left screen shows the note itself, C3, C#3, etc. You can either load the same patch (which doesn’t seem to affect CPU use, like, one patch playing notes went to 15% CPU and another pad did not jump to 30% so I think they are shared per Group), or you can use knob 3 to set up Link Groups which will trigger everything in the Group at once (useful for layering sounds), and since there is only 1 plugin loaded on the first pad, it just plays the notes you want.

I hope that makes sense.

I took a 9V battery to the speakers and confirmed none of them should be blown, so I’m going to have to dig into the electronics then…

Edit it may have been re-speakered with generic shit woofers. They are black and not labelled PS10 or anything, but it’s a 1996 cabinet so it’s the first year of production, and Carvin changed OEMs that built their speakers a lot over the Red Line lifetime… I got a camera on some stickers on the side that don’t shed light at all…

So, unless I can figure out what these speakers are, this thing will probably be returned. GC bought it “as-is” and it has problems  if they aren’t genuine Carvin speakers that people pay $50-70 for, then I want a steep discount or a refund.

I assume the same goes for midi too, so I can mix samples, synths and midi in the same bank?

Well, that didn’t take long.

Yep. Press the Channel/MIDI button, page over twice, and you can set the MIDI channel of each pad, too, as well as transposing it in semitones. So it’s not quite as quick/easy on transposing MIDI and tbh I have no idea why, the right screen is basically unused. But it’s possible.

This is the one area the Maschine+ gets to shine over the MPC (aside from vast piles of 1st-party content), imo. It has a lot more flexibility with setting up each pad in a Group.

I saw this company on an Andrew Huang video; I’d never heard of them before. DIY eurorack kits:

Damn. I hope it resolves quickly and is mild.

Get well soon. Don’t die, and I hope there aren’t any lasting effects.
