This is f*cked up! It’s so hot, in short, that I can’t work. And in general, the brain doesn’t work when it’s so hot! +37 on our street, maybe more, although I have a Black Sea nearby. I’m in Crimea.
Very hot! I don’t want anything. I want it to be autumn already. How is the weather in your place and how are you coping with the heat?
Ice bags from the freezer. I put ice into everything that is liquid and my wife uses a lot of crushed ice for desserts - I mostly stick to the crushed ice and put just a little bit of flavour on it and maybe some milk and fruits… like, crushed ice with some ube flavour, a bit of milk and raspberries from the garden… basically a poor man’s or diet version of Halo Halo…
Where I live it’s almost always breezy, so we just keep our windows open until it gets to over 32c or so.
Also, open back furniture. If you are sitting in a chair that has a completely closed back, your back will heat up and sweat and then it’s a bad time. Fabric backed chairs, wicker furniture, that kind of thing with a fan pointed at you and you’ll be ok.
Also, kind of a given, but stay in the shade. And if you have a fan, try to have it pulling shady cool air towards you.
If you have multiple fans, try to get them set up in different rooms of your house so that they pull air through out. Having fans draw fresh air in some rooms and blow hot air out others will keep the whole house cooler.
Heat advisories everyday. I basically have to keep an eye out to make sure it’s even safe to do yard work because even though I’m pretty tolerant of the heat, everyone probably has that point where it turns into a heatstroke.
Last year my wife came up with the idea to use blackout curtains and reflective surfaces on the windows just to keep the house cool because our AC couldn’t even keep up with the summer heat. Somehow it’s actually working, but it’s crazy to even have to go to such lengths.
It’s kind of hilarious, but a spare window unit in the bedroom was a given a few years ago just to keep costs down, but now it’s kind of a necessity. I can’t sleep when it’s hot, so it’s the cheapest way to keep things cool in a closed space.
I feel bad for anyone who has to work out in the heat, because I honestly don’t know how it’s even safe during the summer anymore. Just being outdoors is probably going to become a serious danger much sooner than we think.
As I wrote elsewhere, I had the “joy” of experiencing the current extreme heat wave while in Palm Springs during the 4th of July weekend. Temps reached 124 degrees F/51 degrees Celsius. It was still over 100 at night. Pretty close to Death Valley heat. If this is the future, prepare for war(s) because some places will become absolutely unlivable and mass migrations are inevitable. And we know that mass migrations are already problematic…
Interestingly enough, I read all about this happening in the late 80’s/early 90’s, when some European scientists were already raising the alarm, mapping out what would most likely be happening in the coming decades, which is now becoming our reality.
Im sitting here wondering what the heck is going on this summer. Im in the middle of central Texas and looking at the forecast for this week is a bit weird… We should be at like 100F to 108F - but its staying mostly in the 90’s. Lets see how august goes…
fuck man, I am totally a lover of the summer weather, but I miss the humidity of new orleans. Sacramento (ca) is so fucking dry and hot that I wake up in the middle of the night because my feet feel like bricks of desert sand and literally I can’t go back to sleep until I moisturize and throw on socks.
I grew up in this shithole town (which I also love) but goddamn I didn’t realize it was as dry as a dead camel’s cunt until I moved away and came back.
I love this time of year, in sacramento it’s like 1 month of glorious weather before it gets really fucking stupid, and I love it up until like January 10th, clock me
