On Music Production & Sillyness

silliness.

you gotta remember—you don’t always need to take yourself so damn seriously. we get so locked into making our kicks hit just right or making our wubs hella rumbly that we forget to laugh, to mess around, to smell the farts with the roses. seriously. sometimes you just gotta play. make dumb, goofy shit. you never know what’ll come out of it.

this whole thing started with a voice memo from my buddy trent, singing the melody from that painfully catchy eiffel 65 song “blue.” and, what do ya know, i already had a sample rack in ableton with chopped-up bits of trent—my loud, red-bearded rockstar of a friend. he’s a damn cartoon. no one like him.

he and his wife just had a baby, and they’re gettin married in new orleans this may. i’ve got the honor of being one of his groomsmen. bachelor party’s gonna be in vegas. please send thoughts and prayers.

i was crackin up the whole time makin this track—and somehow, now i feel totally recharged. ready to dive into those serious music projects i’ve been puttin off. i think i just needed a moment to mess around in the sandbox first.

reminder: producing is a muscle. sometimes you gotta go dumb to loosen it up. get silly, get weird, shake off the pressure, and just create.

anyone else got examples of makin goofy shit just for the hell of it?

What do you call a sandbox? Nope, if i sat down to make a music it got to be a cool track you know.

It’s not always finishes a perfect track but everytime i try my best. and i try new ways to make music you know. i put cables in input ouput you know

of course there was a time where i try new synths and methods and it’s take time but i don’t think about it as a time wasted. like deadmau5 said it’s a time where you gain experience.

Also i just remembered deadmau5 also said it’s a cool idea to put out crazy circus clown music that no one will hear to it. Just make sure no one would ever hear it but you :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Honestly I think it’s better when it gets released, even if under an alias. Sometimes even creating something that’s destined to fail has its merit, especially if you enjoyed creating it in the first place.

I’ve put out a lot of purely ridiculous shit over the years, some being on netlabels, some even getting small-run physical releases. Does anyone still listen to any of it? Probably not, but it was fun to do at the time and I’d do it again!

Holy shit… there’s like… an entire album. Did you record this or is it AI? Christian music and AI music are almost indistinguishable.

Here’s some of my Christian EDM:

Got the farts from youtube.

What I was trying to say was
So many of my songs are silly, I think that being able to laugh and enjoy a track at the same time is what makes epic music.

On the topic of farts

In the future I might post some of my newer silly tracks.

I wanna sample the diarrhea sound in dumb and dumber 1 and make complextro out of such a sample.

The idea of sampling random shit from youtube (like the imgXXXX trick people used to use) sounds like a pretty awesome idea, honestly. I’m always in some degree of ‘do it from scratch’ mode, but a more hands-off approach sounds like a good way to shake things up.

My dad apparently has an affinity for streaming music from Spotify to disc (no idea why; I don’t ask questions) but I ended up building him a standalone recorder for the task and now I’m kind of wondering what all I can sample on the fly with it.

I know you can do it all in your DAW, but if anyone wants the project and standalone, I’d be happy to toss it up on here. I like the idea of having an external recorder app just to spontaneously take random clips out of whatever I’m watching or browsing through.

TL;DR: I’m definitely going to experiment with this type of silliness more. Sounds like fun
