I’ve been producing for a number of months since retiring from work. I know I should grow up but EDM keeps my brain active and I enjoy the process of making music. That has to be the best reason in the world for doing it! I’ve made about 8 tracks, roughly one a month and I’m at the point where I need to pick people’s brains, gather some constructive criticisms and gather the wisdom of the crowd. This looks like a great place to hang out.
Welcome Carl. Enjoying making music is certainly the best reason to do it by far.
You’re in good company here, so definitely Let us know how we can help you out.
Lots of people post their work in the listening booth, so you may be able to find some good nuggets In there related to the work of other members until you get the replies required to post there yourself.
I think there is still a requirement for replying to topics and such a certain number of times before you can make a new topic, but it’s easy to do that quick just by commenting on a bunch of other threads. We never mind additional sets of ears on what we post either, so that’s an easy enough way to engage.
Looking forward to hearing your work, and welcome again.
I joined this forum for exactly the same reason (although I have not retired!), and the collective mutual feedback has been essential in my development as an artist. I’ve learned to better separate my ego from what I produce, I’ve learned to better understand what it is that I like or don’t like in a track, and in general I’ve grown as an artist through determination and continually seeking to better express what it is that I’m trying to say through music.
I thank the members here eternally for everything, and I look forward to many more years yet.
Hello and thanks for the greeting from sunny Kent. Lovely part of the world.
I echo your sentiment. Until now, it’s been friends and family listening to my output and they only say nice things so as not to upset me even though I have thick skin. At the end of the day it’s the wider audience that decides whether something is any good or not. More ears = more feedback = better, more expressive artist.
Yeah, and at some point you decide to what extent you make music for others versus for yourself. Although there is some ethereal “musicality” that no matter the genre, you can tell it’s there, if it’s there and you can be a relatively objective listener, even if you don’t personally like it.
It’s that latter thing I aim for. A lot of my music is bit left field, I like it that way, but I still want it to be good music.
