TL;DR

Hypatia reflects on encountering something ordinary that comes from an unfamiliar place. The EP carries a calm sense of distance and quiet curiosity, lingering in the way a simple object can feel changed once you realise how far it has travelled.

Cephlon’s Hypatia EP takes its name from the Hypatia Stone, a tiny pebble-sized rock found in the deserts of southern Egypt in the late 1990s that is not of this world – or even our solar system. The Hypatia Stone has a unique chemistry that hints at worlds totally alien to us.

Some scientists believe it is a cosmic “dust bunny,” created in the cold nebular debris of a supernova that somehow made its way to Earth. Others are not so sure. The stone also contains the only known example of naturally occurring aluminum, a metal that requires vast amounts of energy to produce here on Earth. It takes its name from Hypatia, one of the greatest Greco-Roman philosophers, mathematicians, and astronomers of her time, from Alexandria.

“The tracks, such as Arconology, on the EP speak to the notion of unknowable and alchemical worlds that the Hypatia Stone hints exist beyond our reach, and perhaps our comprehension,” Greg said. “Something Hypatia, as an astronomer and philosopher, would have marveled at.”

Bio – Cephlon (Audio Cephlon)

Cephlon (formerly known as Audio Cephlon) is the moniker of Greg Lawrence, a pioneering electronic musician hailing from Perth, Western Australia – one of the most isolated cities in the world. Since the late rave era of the mid-1990s, Greg has developed his own unique style of glitchy and melodic electronic music infused with subtle shades of ambience. Like many producers of his ilk, his influences include Warp Records and 4AD artists from the 1990s such as B12, Speedy J, and the Cocteau Twins.

Cephlon’s compositions envelop kernels of dance music genres in futuristic atmospheres, immersive soundtracks, and ambient environments with hints of high-tech dystopia, creating a distinct sense of place for the listener and taking them far from home.

His releases have featured on TXT Recordings, Ambidextrous Records, Kahvi Collective Audio Sculptors, Abolipop Records, Clan Analogue, WEBELOTRAX, Kieper Records, 4-4-2 Music, Breathe Compilations, kreislauf, and Fresh Poulp Records.

Greg has a strong interest in all things science and worked as a geologist in the Western Australian Goldfields in the 1990s.
