[Electronic/IDM/EDM] Aftermath81 - Link! (Album/EP)

I’ve been posting songs for the past few months, and now I’ve finally finalized everything for this album. This could be very easily called an EP due to the short length, although it’s not that huge of a deal to me.

With the completion of the first song, Steel Jungle, I knew that I had to make an album utilizing similar techniques. Namely, this album uses a heavier sprinkling of splicing/rearranging in comparison to my previous ones, and also a more deliberate set of melodies.

Here’s a bunch of things I did in this album:

  • Playing 2 identical tracks with slightly different pitches to induce a special comb-filtering/chorus effect
  • Heavily squishing/stretching sounds to create completely unique sounds
  • Sharp cuts between regions
  • Layering a sample in the background to act as ambience
  • Creating a cadence between different samples
  • In REAPER, Splitting a region into 1/4 or 1/8 note regions, and then moving all region faders to create a rhythmic decay
  • Cropping a sample to a peculiar hit
  • Sample-reduction (mostly in Visitor)

And of course, the typical sampling techniques of pitch-shift, repetition, and splicing.

All of the melodies for this album have been composed by me, using primarily Omnisphere2 as the synthesizer. The arrangement of the drums is composed by me, but the percussive samples are taken mostly from musicradar’s brilliant sample pack “essential-drumkit-samples” plus a few from my Digitakt and some from Omnisphere.

I have not used melodic sample packs (ie: from cymatics, splice, ghosthack, etc)

I’m very happy with the consistency of this album. There’s not really any filler like has happened in my other ones. All the songs are ones I’m proud of, and my skills in composition have improved a bit more than usual.

So tear it apart if you want, or not. I’m done with this album, and now onto whatever’s next!
