Okay, okay… Read this if you want, or don’t, lol.
The whole “brainrot” thing is birthed from a few factors, at least in my mind.
To start, Gen Z humor is very senseless. The more ridiculous it is, the funnier, generally. Some content creators made stuff that would usually just be laughed at for about a month and then die off, but due to the sheer scale and rising popularity of this “brainrot” content, platforms like YouTube and TikTok’s algorithm pushed it more and more.
Because the young audiences tend to just love whatever’s put in front of them, the popularity EXPLODED… But only briefly. Because of this brief popularity boom in the younger (Gen Alpha) audiences, YouTube’s algorithm pushed it more into different audiences, who somewhat rejected it or found it really dumb. Which it is. Other creators merged it with the popular “Sigma male” and “God Tier Rizz” memes/what-ever-the-fuck-you-name-it to try and get more popularity, especially from the younger kids, and it worked? I guess so… This prompted other creators to mock this content or the Gen Alpha Kids who actually viewed it, which actually just ended up pushing it more and more because there was so much content related to it, and nowadays it’s just a massive… Thing… Everybody’s heard it at least once, and it’s hard to forget because of how STUPID it is.
Anyway, I’m probably wrong on a lot of points.
Oh so its being used sarcastically…
Hmm…
Very meatspin.
And i mean that in an existential sarcastic sense of irony
kinda like what mecha_twitchy said, but i’ve been hearing people spanning teenagers to 20 year olds using brainrot slang like "aura’, “ohio” and other tiktok brainrot words i don’t understand at all since i never go on social media.
I kinda think that it looped from serious, to ironic, to serious again.
I personally say that type of stuff to see others reactions and laugh. But that’s pretty much it.
Please, you can just call me Mecha
These might help:
don’t tell me he really just linked know your meme links for brainrot
this thread is a lost cause
Honestly I think that’s accurate. If you’re a gen Z’er yourself, you’ve got a good sense for the weirdness that social media has become lately.
I remember about 10-15 years ago, people were referring to that style of humor as ‘anti-jokes’ because they typically had no punchline and hardly ever made any sense. Kind of like a bait and switch where the audience is left not laughing, or just puzzled by the non-joke. In small doses it was kind of funny and absurdist, but sometimes when nihilism and absurdity becomes front-row and center, you have to ask what the hell we’re doing as a society. Is that what we prefer?
Honestly, most of it looks like a mixture of baby-talk, AI-generated nothingness and some kind of weird nihilist manifesto. There’s nothing to decipher when the message is just gibberish underneath, and I’m beginning to think that’s exactly what it is.
I don’t mean to sound like a christian or a hippie, but I kind of worry about a world that doesn’t understand the difference between an AI hallucination and reality, and I think we’re on the verge of it.
