Cali Metal Head Who Loves Composing EDM

Hello Everyone!

My name is Patrick and I am from California, USA. I’m a chill dude who loves to head bang and dance. In my music, you will find a wide range of influences from metal, drum & bass, house and dub step. I play guitar and for the longest time, I was writing metal songs. 2 months ago, I decided to compose some EDM and I haven’t looked back.

My process (even in EDM) starts in Guitar Pro 8. I use guitar tablature to write midis for all the instruments in my songs, mainly Drums, Bass and Keys/Lead. From there I import the midis into Abelton and I play with the sounds. I use Massive and Serum 2 for most of my bass and lead sections. For drums, I use Kontakt’s One Kit Wonder - Brutal. I will also layer some of Abelton’s built in drums on top of that kit to give it whatever it needs.

Although my most recent songs have all been in 4’s and 8’s, I love to use odd time signatures to create unique beat patterns coupled with polyrhythms. I like to merge multiple genres into my jams by using different drum patterns. I like my music to be unpredictable. I’m a music theory nerd although I’m not an expert at all.

Anyways, I’m sure we all will chat more over time! I appreciate you letting me intro myself and I can’t wait to share and discuss music with you all!

My SoundCloud is PBishProductions if anyone would like to check out my music. That’s also my YouTube and IG handle. I appreciate it! Much love!

Sincerely,

Patrick

I havent heard eletronic music that uses polyrhythms that exclusively. Ill be sure to see if i can find it on your soundcloud.

Thank you! Here are some songs that include them:

3 to 1 - The main piano line is in 7’s. The opening section, the drums align with the 7’s. The second section, the drums go into a 4:4 beat alongside the lead in 7’s.

Enter The Ring - This is just a fun little melody using thirds. The beat pattern is in 7:8 and for every section, I move the root note down one half step. It begins with a minor third into a major third into a 4th into a tritone into a 5th into a minor 6th into a major 6th. No poly, but still heavily theory orientated.

Out West - There a bunch of time signature changes in this one and at least one poly. Originally I wrote this on guitar in clean, but it sounded cool electronic, so I went with it lol. This is one of my first edm songs and I was using Abelton’s built into sounds, so it’s not as clean sounding as I’d like.

Feeling Lucky - No poly’s here, but most of the song is in 7’s

Night Owl - Has another poly using 7’s and 4’s after the first 3 or 4 sections.

A lot of this poly influence comes from my love for the band Meshuggah. You’ll also notice the kick following the lead’s beat patterns in my songs. All thanks to one band lol. For my polys, the drums are always in 4:4 and the lead is either in 5,7,9, 11 or 13’s. I repeat the section 4 times so it lines up for the next section perfectly.

Thanks for the interest! I hope you enjoy! I’m still working on mastering, but I’m getting better with every song I create.

Much love!

Ahhhh so you’re into heavy music..!
Welcome, if you make electronic you’ll like it here. We don’t bite…
Mm, no promises on that one.

D&B and Dubstep are probably my two favourites out of the stuff you make… Have you tried making hard dance? That is… Hardstyle, Rawstyle, Mainstream Hardcore, Gabber - etc?
I think you’ll catch onto it quickly - then there will be TWO of us on the forum… Sick!

Nuther Ableton user… I used to accidentally spell it “abelton” too. Sounds better IMO.

If you want to upload to SC or Bandcamp then you can post links in the Member Releases Section, or similar. Look forward to it dude.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I think some of my music would be considered hard dance. I’m really bad with all the sub genres. It’s not hardstyle fist pumping, but it’s more like Hard House? Lot’s of boots and pants drum beats with heavy bass and synths. I’ll message you a couple songs and see what you think!

LMAO! I never noticed my misspelling. Thanks for the info!

I’m not sure if I can post links yet because I made my account last night. I wanted to joing to bass line challenge and that’s where I ran into the problem. My links work in the messages to users though.

I appreciate you!

You rock! Thank you!! :sign_of_the_horns:

it kinda feels like a lot of your tracks dont feel finished. theres a solid foundation, but theres not enough ideas to really finish it off. Off West sounds the most complete, and its a pretty decent track.

this also maybe due to the fact that EDM has never really apealed to me much.
but if you wanna talk about metal then im up for that. i can see that your metal influences in your edm stuff is through polyrhythms. right now im experimenting with cybergrind and thinking of making a ep or something. also toying with the idea of pitch shifted brutal death metal gutterals over it since i do that.

Fair enough, I appreciate you giving me a listen and honest feedback! Out West has the most sections out of any song for sure, so that makes sense.

I totally understand that! I have 3 metal songs I wrote on my Sound Cloud. Spiral Dungeons, Death Tech and Decapitation are all me playing guitar and the bass and drums are electronic. I’m still working on guitar tone, it’s been a challenge. I would love to take a listen of your cybergrind work. I can’t define what that means, but I always like taking a look at new genres.

Damn! My 3 metal jams need some vocals! It something I don’t personally enjoy. Maybe the beat patterns of the vocals, but not the context. And I don’t want to just shout random things on a track. I’m a big fan of Between the Buried and Me, Meshuggah and Animals as Leaders. A lot of my musical influence comes from them.

Link me some of your work if it’s not too much to ask!

yeah here’s a prototype

my friend who’s new to making music may collaborate and make this a duo thing, so don’t take this as a final product.
i don’t listen to actual cybergrind, so this is moreso taking my experience in goregrind, deathgrind, and brutal death metal and making it electronic. more details in the post. feedback would be nice since it seems a lot of people skip over what i make.

my other stuff is more idm focused, but i have dabbled in harsh noise.

Sounds like an awesome combination of tastes! You still use the OG Massive?
Also, are you a fan of Meshuggah by any chance?

Edit: I just saw the later post about it. I knew my spidey senses weren’t wrong!

Nice! Thank you!

I listen to that wav, but it all sounds a bit muffled. Is it supposed to be like that? I’m getting a lot of djent vibes mixed with Slipknot from what I can hear.

I’ll check out some of your other work! I appreciate the link!

Thank you! I believe I do? I’m only 2 months into producing music and my knowledge is very limited. I believe I do? I haven’t downloaded any presets for it. I’ve only just downloaded Serum 2 presets like a week ago. The rest of them are just on the stock presets. Is there a new version of Massive that I should be using? How would I know if I’m on the old one of not?

And you were spot on! Meshuggah is life! I finally got to see them live a couple years ago and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a heavier show in my life. Absolutely stunning.

yeah, it does sound muffled slightly now that i think about it. think what i’ll do in the future is make each synth separately and put it together or something. i kind of want the production to feel as clean as it can, but not sterile. there’s just elements that are going so fast that i don’t want it to feel entirely drowned out.
i appreciate the feedback

Any time! You got this! It’s super aggressive and I like that!

Scope out the ‘free plugins thread’ if you want a copy of Massive X  . White noise posted a free promo that’s going on if you want the next gen version of Massive. I just picked up both because I’m really late to the party and I’m already having a blast. How did I live so long without performer (post my seven-seas days)? No fucking clue

Also if you’re making your own sounds, you’re on the right path already (imho). Keep it up! And if you need any help getting rolling, there’s always great sound design talks going on around these parts. And a lot of random-ass info dumping by yours truly

There’s also a metal thread, if that’s of any interest. Great to have you here!

Thank you! I’ll check out that White Noise promo! I would love to get Massive X! I appreciate the info.

Thanks for the love! I really need to learn how to make my own synths. It seems daunting, but I’m going to take a crack at it this week. I’ll join those chats! I need to learn as much as I can!

Always down for a metal thread!

Thanks for the warm welcome!
