Recorded this jam the other day. Fun looping setup that I had set up for a few weeks. I’ve recorded a few hours of multitracked material with this rig. I’m sure I’ll get down to editing some tracks from it soon. It’s definitely not going to sit on my harddrive for 5 years
Been away for a minute. Landed a new job, got my mixer repaired, was able to buy back one piece of gear I had to sell back in February from the very shop I sold it to (the Yamaha FB01), so I’m kinda back into gear buying mode. I went into the shop a couple of weeks ago and spotted this gem. Now I have to get another EA-1 to go with it. I did also pick up the album it’s resting on as well..
Hey serious question, do you know how the maintenance is on the new units? I’m thinking the occasional head cleaning/alignment and swapping out the tape loop. But how many hours is it realistically between those kind of services? Probably have an FAQ on this somewhere…
From Shane: “They can last 5 -10 years without a service but it’s good to service them every three years or so depending on usage. Most tape loops last years and beyond 300 hours”
Wow, yeah I’ve had this for 15 years, it’s called FL studio keys to midi. It works best with good keyboards that have n-key rollover, but you can at least pluck out some notes with nothing else needed on any laptop. Literally how I wrote music for the first 4 or 5 years I did it. Not eager to return. We truly live in the end times.
It’s definitely cool to have something like this around. The list of all in one synths that can do something like it is very short (I can only think of the Matrixbrute, Pro 2/3, Iridium, Matriarch, and One off the top of my head). And none of those which can freely assign their outs to CV/audio, have the same number of outs, or are connected to an elektron sequencer.
I see the most wins for people already in the Elektron world, but that’s a lot of people so I’m stoked that this is going to force other manufacturers to consider outputs at some point.
The GND-1T is a strange beast, and trying to summarize its sound feels a little like opening a dictionary and deciding to use every word in one very long sentence. Or, better yet, borrowing an Oscar-winning title: it is Everything Everywhere All at Once – speech machine, bass synth, algorithmic drum generator, ambient box, glitch instrument, and sound-design workstation – and after several months with it, the sounds I remember most are thick, rubbery basses and slow reverberant pads with tiny metallic details that reminded me of water trickling across metal.
Richard van Hoesel built all of that around what he describes as a faithful emulation of the Texas Instruments speech technology behind the classic Speak & Spell, with Joe Manton contributing heavily to the ideas that shaped the instrument during development. The part that makes the GND-1T difficult to reduce to a nostalgic speech box is everything Richard then wrapped around that core: modulation, filtering, drums, Morph, Drift, expression control, effects, and a modern MIDI implementation that lets the old speech idea leak into parts of the instrument where it has no business being.
Didn’t really hear much about this one til now. It sounds pretty neat-o. Going to try and make some of these patches on my current synths and see how I go.
so apparently people are now vibe-coding new firmwares for Elektron devices
I’ve seen talk about the Octatrack, Model:Cycles, putting the Cycles FW onto the Sample and then putting the Cycles custom FW onto it. I’m sure there is more I haven’t seen. The Cycles firmware adds Syntakt Machines to it somehow, and 6 track audio out over USB
I just read about digitakt and digitone emulators out in the wild, too.
www.elektronmods.com seems to be the main site for all this, now. On reddit someone posted Elektron’s response which was basically “just don’t brick your device” iirc
Welp.
At least I think it’s all mostly vibe-coded. Someone on reddit mentioned “so we’re all just okay with AI now?” and tbh when shit happens this fast it’s always AI (EDIT yes, it’s basically all being vibe-coded)
edit this person has Monomachine Machines running on his mk2 OctaTrack
