Yeah, I sometimes enjoy designing sounds and presets and just playing around with synths, but I’m spending less time on it nowadays since I’m busy with work and family and then just switch up some of my own older presets when I just want to make some music or get an idea down - and especially when looking for virtual “acoustic” instruments I use a lot of SWAM and East West, since I rarely try to make synths sound exactly like acoustic instruments. I was just surprised that Pigments didn’t really grab my attention as a sound design tool, I always closed it after a while and opened a different synth and can’t even really say what it is - the sound is def part of it and probably just the comparison with some other wavetable synths. No idea, have to load it up in a project soon and try again ^^
Funny, I loaded it up this morning and it mostly clicked. I was able to work my way through to a sound I liked. It’s not perfect yet, but I’m not sure if that’s down to how I wrote the music this thing is playing or maybe because it’s not mixed yet at all.
i tried vengence - avenger a couple of weeks ago and i absolutely LOVED it. i love flexible synths and DAMN that thing is flexible.
my computer cant run it well enough to use properly though so i need to wait until i get a new computer to keep it.
if avenger was your girlfriend:
So, last night I realised I’ve been missing something in Pigments: THE FUNCTION GENERATORS. Gah. The only thing I didn’t figure out was how to set their length in milliseconds so I could use them exactly like envelopes, but it’s easy enough to make an AD envelope or an interesting LFO. Freed up an LFO and did a better job of what I wanted it to do, (modulating SEM filter shape in one-shot mode), without wasting an envelope.
I like fm synths very much lately. Not that I know the ins and outs of it, but I can make it sound classy.
BTW Yesterday formatted the hard drive and reinstalled the Windows, so that all the plugins that need to be installed through the installer were removed. But also, thank God, I have a folder with dll plugins, I saved it separately and moved it to the new Windows.
Xfer has a new beta of Serum out, with a crazy feature that I have been waiting for for years in any synth. Synths like Flexion promised to do it and vanished in the process even before release. People said it’s crazy and can’t be done. People said it’s dangerous and shouldn’t be done. I can’t believe I’m still alive to see this day.
Thanks to Steve the future is here now:
" New: LFO Point modulation"
I haven’t tested it yet, I just read about it on KVR and came here to yell it at you directly after praising Steve at Xfer lol… I have a feeling that I’m gonna use a lot of Serum in the next projects
Edit: not sure why I’m replying to you parricide, I think it’s because I started writing a post about Avenger a while ago lol, but maybe the information is of value to you hehe…
Serum’s great. I use it quite a lot.
if it makes you feel any better that is an exciting feature to me too
particularly with WT synthesis, it makes it easier to create more natural movements rather than repeating changes.
the brain quickly picks up on repeated changes within only a couple of cycles. it only takes a slight modulation to LFO values to hide the synthetic modulation feel. point modulation is not completly necessary imo, not for this anyway, but every modulation capability is a modulation capability i am on board with
not a soft synth, rather an effect, but this really caught my attention, as there is no convolver type plugin in Bitwig (afaik), and I am just not going to pay 200 bucks for one of those fancy IR plugs:

This looks simple and straight forward…any good competing products I should consider instead?
@Creepr Reaper has built in impulse response vst.
So does FL Studio, but I won’t switch for that.
FM synthesis is the shit.
If you’re ever curious as to how they work, you can easily build your own operators in modular environments such as VCV Rack or Voltage Modular (both are free, whoa man) with a few oscillators, dedicated envelopes, amps and a small amount of routing.
Thanks, you just gave me my next video idea
Upgraded to Melodyne 5. Is nice.
There is a nice new synth available by Tone 2, the makers of Icarus 2:
Will be available with promo and demo stuff in March 2021, but early access seems to have started today:
I’m a bit biased since I made some sounds for it, but I enjoyed working with it and its streamlined feature set much more than expected and use it a lot now. It’s not a monster workstation like Icarus, not the synth you reach for if you want to use ALL the LFOs, but instead more like a supercharged mini-synth with some special tricks that you can use many times in a project without hitting the perfomance too much. Very easy on performance, it’s extremely fast to work with, sounds great and features more than 2000 presets including some made by yours truly
Gonna post more about it when they have some promo stuff, but I just saw the early access version and thought in case someone here wants to spend some money, this might be a cool option ^^
+1 for pigments!
Tone2’s previous with DRM is… dodgy. Be worth checking out what baggage comes with it.
I never had any bad experiences with Tone 2 software - what’s the problem?
They get a bit overenthusiastic about examining the contents of your PC. Or at least in the past they enjoyed a rep for such. I haven’t kept up on their current doings. I was tempted to buy some of their stuff way back but just didn’t like their rep.
Thanks, I looked a bit into it and found an open letter from some cracking or piracy site attacking the dev like 10 years ago, saying people using cracked stuff might have problems with their plugins because they can detect it?
Not using cracked stuff and it seems like they changed it years ago, so guess I’m safe in any case…
Aye, like I said, I’ve not looked at Tone2 for quite a long while.
I don’t use a vast array of softies, just got a few good ones. Last one I bought was Falcon.
