Christian Music Megathread

This is so weird. It’s like an alternative timeline; everything running parallel to MTV and the radio and popular 90s alt rock, just with proselytizing instead of breakups and sexual innuendo.

Growing up without any religion to speak of, it was interesting later in life to learn how deep the modern Christian music rabbit hole was during that time and how much it paralleled secular music with only rare intersections.

mwahaha we’ve only just started lol

Me and my brother have this long-running joke that metal bands are like sports teams, because they trade members with one another so much (and from completely different states, countries, continents, etc) that the original guys could usually just regroup and call themselves something else (and weirdly, that also happens more than you’d think).

Well look at this shit:

I guess the christian rock scene is more like, “Cough up the cash, you get the band”. I can’t really verify that this happened, but look at this wonky timeline. It looks sort of like Stellar Kart usurped Audio Adrenaile at one point. This is the funniest shit I’ve ever seen in my life

wait what’s going on there? is there supposed to be words on that there graph?

This is the full version; it’s just hilarious that they all started up again with one original guy, and then he bailed right after, ushering in a whole slew of new people which makes no sense. Bands with no original members are one thing, but this looks almost intentional. lol

David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) was an old subversive indie “Christian” artist who used to play at Cornerstone (defunct music festival around where I live). Met him a couple times and was always a very nice guy. He has some good concept albums, although I haven’t listened to anything from him for a long time.

This song’s simple mood shifts still impress me:

New fear unlocked. Thanks, Reddit

Idea for Jewish/Japanese fusion restaurant: “Shabbachi”. A personal teppanyaki chef prepares and cooks kosher food at your table occasionally flinging a matzo ball in your mouth with his while sauteing you a gefilte fish

Pretty sure this originally came out in 2002, but it just got rereleased. This band later became Mutemath and actually had some mainstream success, but their nu-metal days were way more fun  . They also always seemed to have a weird DnB streak in them, too.

one christian song that still resonates in my head:

from a pop music edge, this is a well written song especially when the key change happens. not sure if it happens in this version. there are SO MANY bad versions.

also the story behind it is kind of beautiful and relatable. the lyrics are powerful if you’re religious. it’s a very effective song. I’m not religious but I’m still moved by it. “and now let the weak say I am strong, let the poor say I am rich because of what the lord has done for us.” religious or not, giving a sense of gratitude has many realizable returns in whatever you think the soul is, and it was written in a very difficult time in the composer’s life.
