The Hardware Megathread

i discovered the keys are easy to pop off.

good lord does this thing get covered in oil spots, though. lots of fun so far, especially the sample editor/mangler

only thing I’d wish for would be independent track lengths but I don’t think even Renoise offers that, or any tracker really. I’ll have to get creative

the Tracker+ can play NES games. Polyend I’m begging you give us access to the synth part of the emu within the tracker…

now THAT would be something

people have asked Polyend to make a chiptune synth engine back in 2023, but I guess it didn’t take off. They even made a lil piccy.

The Tracker+ is odd how it handles its synths. Basically you have 3 synth “slots” that can be ACD, VAP, FAT, WTFM, or PERC. You have 8 voices of polyphony but they spread them across the slots. Annoying. 3, 3, and 2 voices. (voices are allocatable, now) PERC can play 5 drum sounds at once while only consuming 1 voice.

I’d love the option to disable slots to gain their voice counts in another. It’s weird to me they make a point of saying PERC only uses 1 voice when it doesn’t matter. Whatever slot uses it doesn’t free up its voices.

Turns out you CAN do that, now.

But in the end the limitations are par for the course and it’s a lot of fun fucking up samples with the sample editor and its destructive edits/effects

One voice per sampler track is also weird because when playing a sample instrument I can play chords on the pads -_- lol but if I want a chord I have to play it across 3+ tracks then resample (which can have a charm of its own, though, when re-pitching)

in other hardware-related news, I traded in my TD-3, RD-6, and Microbrute for a Microfreak. I plan to print a module case for it and use it as a sound source for the Tracker+

Naturally this means Microfreak 2 coming to a trade show near you early next year

I also now have a 3D printer and will never buy another Decksaver again. Already printed a cover and stand for the Tracker+

That might be the smartest use I’ve heard for a 3d printer. Just jumped up my want list a few notches.

What other kinds of things do you find yourself using it for? I’ve had ideas to print some custom parts for my KB stand or cable management items, but I think I’d have to do CAD for that.

I’m looking into learning tinkerCAD (free browser-based model-making tool), it’s supposed to be good for beginners. I have an Elegoo Centauri Carbon, it was like $400 with an accessory kit (another nozzle, more filament, shock absorbing feet, some extra beds). The build volume is pretty big, 256x256x256mm (10x10x10”). After discovering the slicing software can scale parts I can make a cover for any rectangle  - the Tracker’s cover was two piece and someone else made it.

I downloaded a AA and AAA battery box I plan to print Soon :trade_mark: And a clip to mount an iPhone to my OP-1 just because. Being able to sample off USB has been a game-changer for me.

I’ve used mine for all kinds of audio related stuff - knobs, sliders, cases, brackets, clips, wiring harnesses, cable management, etc. All the little bits and bobs that get lost, broken or you just wish you had but would have to buy a 100-pack on Amazon/China slowboat.

It’s probably not the right tool for the job or the most cost effective solution in every situation (you’ll find people online printing all sorts of shit they should probably just buy, only because they have the printer at hand), but it’s really damn handy, and not just for audio. I’ve built and fixed all sorts of things with mine.

Printers have come a long way in the last decade and a lot of them are pretty close to plug-n-play (though they all require some troubleshooting from time to time). If you’re curious what’s out there to print, you might look through printables.com and thingiverse.com to see if anything lines up with what you’re wanting.

My Centauri is really fast, too. I’ll look at a STL file and someone says it took like 15h on their Prusa and mine is under 2 lol - I still have an older printer I’d like to upgrade to modern specs, the last 10 years made a lot of strides.

Apparently i need more bolts/screws that the Microfreak didn’t already come with

all the stands

Don’t think I posted the cover for the Tracker+

it also fits into the same bag my Model:Cycles uses. Pity they’re no longer sold, but as I doubt I’ll ever bring both the Tracker+ AND the Cycles with me anywhere at the same time, I guess it’s fine

lol where are you ordering this shit from

the local hardware store would be where I go, but apparently the original 3D Waves design re-used screws from the case, but the “smooth sided” one I downloaded and printed has some issue doing that. I can only get the rear screws deep enough to catch and tighten.

sampled the Chime Grand piano preset from my Proteus 2000, 16-bit 44.1 mono and stereo included C0-C6, one note per octave

Chimey Piano

also included the pti polyend tracker instruments since that was the original impetus behind this

You mean you guys don’t compulsively use Aliexpress for everything?

Now that I’ve been around the Chinese more…. Temu is where it’s at.

3d printer goes brrrrrr, I actually designed these

I’ve already started refining the next version but for now it works as well as I need it to. It’s holding one of those thin magnetic attaching iPhone batteries.

so I made one of those piezo/contact mic’d noise boxes from some “storage box” I had laying around. It sounds okay, but throw effects on it and you’re either summoning unspeakable evil or being flung to the far ends of the cosmos. It also has internal storage compartments for stowing more goodies to make noises with. I’m adding a kalimba keyboard this weekend.

Looks great! I love all the springs, they make such a nice racket. Best part is you can just keep adding bits and bobs until it’s too heavy to move lol

I’m a big fan of using a rosin bow on these. The sustained vibration is a cool counterpoint to the banging and twanging. As an added bonus you can walk around your house bowing everything you own to see what has an interesting sound inside it.
