Today I was in the subway and the idea just popped in my head and I started writing and I just finished it. I really like the result
I think if you are Dj, a promoter or someone related to the scene its worth reading.
This is cool and hits at some good ideas.
Bc I’m a slave to my interpretation of life that’s a matrix combo of experience, memory, and language I want to add something here but know it’ll fall short of what I’m actually reaching for
Firstly, those small parties always led to human connection, it’s where we made our scene friends and in turn thats how the scene was built, bc we became friends over the thing and worked to buokd it together sharing the experience. If one stuck around long enough it got big and you were in for that, or you moved bc work/life had you move and you sought this thing out to begin anew making those connections and experiences and memories
Further, why do we seek that out? Human connection ultimately, and for that to be there has to exist the drive to do so, which recently has been heavily diminished. A combo of terminally online couple with rampant Inflation and under employed, and you get isolationist people who don’t want to see this out.
It was always effort to go to these things and be a part of. Now you can watch on a scroll wheel of a corralled app on your phone laying in bed
While the underground will always exist, it’s certainly going through a period of deconstruction and diminishment as people loose interest in taking effort in one another.
This also though, means the underground moves away from this for now to something like home listening.
I have more to say about this all and will come back after I think some more, good article.
Thanks for taking the time to give a commentary about the text! Im glad you liked it! And, for sure yeah we are going through difficult times
its like the pandemic never ended
Really interesting bit in the middle about how part of the point is letting go and moving on. Like, there’s the economic fear of failure, but also there’s a certain amount of pride on the line in the larger industry. Maybe the underground only has pride, or maybe it has none at all. But it reminded me of Buddhism, in which the goal is to let go of material and spiritual desires. The underground has definitely let go of the material, it’s how you get some of the conditions that the underground accepts. But spiritually? I’m not so sure. Sometimes I think the underground is so afraid to be co-opted or mentioned in the same breath as the mainline industry that I think it keeps some people from doing things that would be really cool just because they feel like it’s not original enough. I, for one, will admit that all my art is pulling from other art. And I see that to a greater or lesser degree in all the art I consume, whether its creators admit it or not. So I think it’s pretentious when people do things the hard way or let their art suffer for the sake of originality, when I’m not entirely convinced originality is the goal. The goal is to let go, not talk about letting go.
For sure. You can’t force originality so I think we shouldnt look for it (in any creative endeavor). Being genuine is much more different. That’s why I dont like when people try to glorify the underground or decide all the time whats underground and whats not. I know a guys thats obsessed with it. Hes so down the rabbithole that he eliminated his music (hes a singer/artist) from everywhere. Gladly I still have one of his CDs, cause I like his music, but I dont like hes mentality. He thinks hes a rebel but for me it just sounds so pretentious.
