[ambient, IDM, breaks, downtempo] Jazzyspoon - The Last of the Peripheral Visionaries

I have had these in some form on the backburner for a while now and only this year have they started turning into what I wanted out of them. The latest IDM forums/ Glitchpulse records release, Icosagan Vol 1, has the track “Time is Unreal” on it. That track was part of this collection originally.

See album blurb below for the long winded story behind this release…

Free download, btw.

“In the mid to late 1990’s, I was a part of an experimental group in Dallas, TX called Peripheral Visionaries. It was me, a guitarist named Brandon G, and occasionally a DJ named Chris C. We mostly played chill rooms at raves and occasionally record stores in Deep Ellum. We were pretty out there. Limited by no money and often borrowed hardware, our tape recordings were ‘rough’ and our shows were extra bizarre. We played for 5 years together and maybe achieved a small, local cult status. In 1999, we lost Brandon to a drug overdose. I don’t believe I ever really got over it. I like to think that he would have loved the music I make nowadays. I still listen to each of my tracks from his perspective as I am making them.

So, in honor of Brandon (and Chris, too), I have decided to recreate / rebuild updated versions of some of our tracks/jam sessions 30 years later, maybe as we would have wanted them to sound at the time. Old hardware recordings recreated with VST, tapes, and AI. I even sampled some of the original material (I still have our tapes!). I modeled the guitar in ‘Brandon’ from a recording of Brandon straight out of one of our jam sessions. It has been an interesting, nostalgic journey.”

Awesome to see you diggin in the crates and using original material from old tapes! What a wonderful way to honor the memory of your friend. I’d love to hear those tapes at some point

Thanks, Wayne, for the kind words and the support. I’ll see what I can dig up and post here. It’s funny, I bought a blank tape for the first time in a decade or so in December to send you some of our stuff/samples when you were doing the whole ‘send me tapes’ project.

edit: found one. It sounds rough, but you can kind of get an idea of what some of these sounded like originally.

Found another one.

My musical life has been such a rich tapestry of noisy garbage. :joy:
