Happy Saint P's Day!

Hoping everyone is enjoying "It's socially acceptable to get pissed today" day and that others aren't / didn't act like a dick too much around you.

Some piss-head neighbor of mine definitely just died. That's one way to party

Actually, part of me wonders if that evening stated out with, "Hey man, wanna check out my gun collection?"

Re: Happy Saint P's Day!

The Westernized St. Patrick's day is dumb. Just a bunch of amateur drunks looking for an excuse to act like dumbasses : )

Some friends invited me out, I had two beers and left. Good to see friends, but would have been better without a bunch of drunks yelling in my ear and spilling drinks on everyone.

I then came home, promptly ate some garbage food (taco bell!) and fell asleep with a vodka soda in my hand watching Criminal Minds.

Edit: It might be cool in some places, but Ohioans are notoriously obsessed with drinking holidays. There was a cop car just sitting on the street outside of every single bar. So that is how awesome we are at St. Pat's

Yeah..I know what you mean..didn't even have a drink yesterday myself. Alcoholics aside, I think it's a just a piss-up day for the 30s and under these days. Then there's those who like a good parade, God bless 'em..I hate that kind of thing.

Still, it's a good excuse to hold a party or have friends and family around for an informal meal and a few drinks, I suppose.

Re: Happy Saint P's Day!

Had some Guinness from bottles because they came with a free glass. Man, they were not good at all. Been drinking lots of proper dark beers - good stouts and porters etc and the Guinness just tasted off. I've never really loved it, it's pretty watery for a dark beer, but the ones yesterday were disappointment. Oh well, got a new glass and had a decent time.

Maybe it was just old? The Guinness we get in a can/bottle here pretty much tastes like on-tap these days. But yea, Guinness is an odd duck, its quite different from other stouts, but that the others don't have the nitrous do hickey in them?

I'm always up for having people over. I'm not sure that is something people do around here. The always put the corned beef and cabbage out at the grocery, but for the life of me I can't think of a single Ohioan I know who cooks that up and invites anyone over lol.

Kegs and eggs is another thing people do here on St. Pat's that I don't get. They get up early and start drinking right at breakfast. I'm usually not good at that unless I've just not gone to sleep yet from the night before...which rarely happens these days lmao.

Re: Happy Saint P's Day!

Went to Home Depot and bought a 16 foot ladder to try to fix our broken motion sensor light above the driveway, then bought an over-the-toilet shelf for the bathroom so it doesnt look like a dorm bathroom with a stack of toilet paper rolls on the window sill, and a new toilet seat with a slow-drop feature so it doesn't slam shut....then I mowed part of the lawn before nature let me have it with a sudden downpour. Mt St. Paddy's day.

It wouldn't be so bad if U.S. Americans could hold their beer.

Re: Happy Saint P's Day!

corned beef and cabbage..that's a good one. I don't think I know anyone over here who actually eats that. Here in Ireland is bacon and cabbage..the whole corned beef and cabbage thing comes from back in the early days, when Irish people arrived in the US and were too poor to pay for bacon..so it's more of an American thing really..yet still they keep saying we eat it here.

That said, some places here have it on the menu..but for most Irish, it's is..was..and always shall be bacon and cabbage.

And yeah, the bottled G doesn't tend to travel all that well. I know some folks say that's just a myth, but it's true..it usually tastes like shite..too many variables in the transporting of it, I guess. Kegs are a different story..any G I've ever had outside of Ireland that came from the tap was OK..some a little iffy..but in general 100 times better than the bottles any day.

Usually when its bad from a keg it's because they've not cleaned the lines. Interesting about the corned beef and cabbage vs. bacon and cabbage. I like corned beef on a sandwich. As far as those one-pot kind of dishes go, I really like a family recipe that includes, ham, lima beans, a lot of onions and thick, flour noodles. Its something my long gone relatives made often during the Depression. You cook the shit out of the onions, ham and broth until all the ham flavor is in the broth. Then add the beans and noodles as it finishes up.

Bacon and cabbage sounds good. Kinda reminds me of the way I like sour greens done (with bacon bits and grease).

I must try that..sound good.

And yes to the cooking everything in the one pot, when it comes to C&B..unhealthy as fuck, but tastes soooooo good. That's how my gran used to cook it..all in the one pot, with spuds in another..you could smell the cabbage boiling a mile off.

That sounds amazing. Haha. Cooking with bacon grease pretty much = awesome. I can get you that family recipe. We make homemade noodles for it. That’s kinda the key to the thing : )

Also...grandma’s cooking is always the best!

Please do..would love to give it a try. Make sure to include the little things you use, such as seasoning and the likes..they make all the difference..obviously. We mightn't be able to get the same brands over here, but I guess the nearest thing would do.
