Icon2 How do you edit vocals to be trippy?

So i've heard a lot of tracks, that take regular vocals, and they make them trippy as fuck!! Here is an example of what i am talking about:

Listen to stewie voice, how it becomes when he says "just relax". Just watch the first 22 seconds of the video. I tried with some pitch and effects edit but couldnt do it, and a lot of producers make it to their trance tracks. Let me know

A short delay, maybe 30-40 milliseconds.

Reverb (room). I also think it's stretched, because it sounds grainy. Then just pitch (and formant) to do the follow-up effect.

i think some of that voice was crossfaded into somebody else doing a monster voice with or without pitch shifting. that was a heinous video i must say.

make anything 'trippy' instantly: flanger, phaser, and/or chorus, reverb and/or very short delay.

Re: How do you edit vocals to be trippy?

I have had a lot of luck cutting up samples and using time stretching.
You can get some really cool effects by pitching one track up and octave and one down an octave so that by the time your first sample (oct lower) finnishes its loop the second one (oct up) has played twice.
Hears an example.

Dont mind the terrible mix, It is more than a couple years old :gu_b_party421:

Re: How do you edit vocals to be trippy?

back in 08 a band I was in was looking to achieve this type of sound as well. we were able to do it on vocals by using a ring mod (along with other fx like delay, reverb etc). Ring mods can do a whole bunch of things far from close to this sound, but if dialed in right, will yield some spot on results IMO.

Are there any special eq with that mod?

I use a dub delay for trippy Vocals.
Work with ableton? I can send you an Instrument Rack. Write me a PM.

Resample up and down.

Mix with originial.

And you get creepy. Not like in that particular example though.

double track them. have one pitched down or up. cut them up. run them through a glitch plug or ramdomizer. loads of unsynced delays and big reverbs.

Re: How do you edit vocals to be trippy?

There's really no appropriate answer to this. Just mess around with effects until you get a cool sound. Don't over-analyze it. It isn't a math problem. Fuck with parameters and you'll find something that surprises you.

Re: How do you edit vocals to be trippy?

You can achieve those trippy vocals using Alchemy VST... There was a pretty good tutorial about it I followed years ago, basically modulating the granular length of the sample, layered with the original, I think...

I searched a bit, awhile at work this morning, but couldnt find anything... Cant remember who did the tutorial

I know this aint much help, but if you can find a tutorial for Alchemy, even tho u dont use Logic, or maybe dont use alchemy, it might point u in the right direction. There are other VSTs out there that do similar things as Alchemy
