Re: What instrument should I learn - piano or guitar?

Since you are well versed in guitar,i would say piano.
i play both myself.theory in guitar is similar in many ways, and it will translate well.
in fact it is not an issue to learn both at the same time.
it is theory after all!

I've heard that if you can play the piano, you can learn any other instrument in no time

Re: What instrument should I learn - piano or guitar?

Let's see the pro's an cons:

Piano:
In my opinion, it is fastest to learn and has a much direct way of applying music theory. You can also transpose your new skill on a synth keyboard.

Guitar:
As a guitar player, this would be my recommendation besause I personnaly like the sound better. There is however a much bigger learning curve. Nailing those chords can be tricky. Music theory isn't as spontanious. It will be frustrating.

My two cents. I could go in more details but I think piano offers more simplicity and diversity at a beginner level. Down the line both are very complex in their own ways.

As cliche as it sounds, follow your instinc and learn the one that stimulates you the most.

Piano is more useful for writing electronic music, learn both

Both are equally important...any instrument is beneficial...not just piano or guitar...

Piano is the best instrument to write a song because you can play chords with one hand and a melody with the other. It is harder to do this on guitar.

But it's going to take you a good number of years to get there...

Re: What instrument should I learn - piano or guitar?

The Piano is more versatile in producing electronic music, since you can pretty much control all synths and stuff with a MIDI Keyboard, it's also useful for knowing chords and things like that that are useful when composing.

Guitar could be nice to if you focus on incorporating a guitar to your sound, but it's less versatile.

I played the fudging trumpet for 13 years - that sure as hell wasn't ideal for getting into electronic music.

Re: What instrument should I learn - piano or guitar?

I am a drummer but I play a little on piano and guitar too...
I think that the piano can help you a lot as a producer because mainly all of our modern music is based on chords and melodies and you just learn to play with those live on the piano..
but , guitar is also helpful , and I personally think that you have a lot tof - Beautiful things to play on guitar and for me it is much more enjoyble. and I think it is beautiful !
hope I'v helped

Re: What instrument should I learn - piano or guitar?

I have been playing guitar for 8+ years and don't have a lick of piano/keyboard training, but I've picked up a good bit along the way. With 20/20 hindsight, I think learning to play piano is more useful in electronic music production, since (almost) everything is keyboard-based.

HOWEVER, learning to play the guitar is something that I have never and will never regret. Like OP mentioned, there are certain things you can do with a guitar that you can't do with a keyboard and vice-versa, and that's where creativity and having a unique sound/style happens. Also, a lot (probably most) of synths and MIDI keyboards have dinky midi keys that makes *playing* them in a similar way to an actual piano not translate 100%. This is pretty obvious. Plastic keys do not equal a Steinway, and you'll end up compensating in some way regardless of your training. Again, that's where creativity happens. To me, a guitar will always *feel* like a guitar. All of this is also subject to personal opinion.

Bottom line, I think that learning to think in the sort of "linear" way a piano's notes are laid out lends itself well to learning music theory and using the tools of the trade (the trade being music production). With guitar, not so much. But there is something magical about a guitar. The chord inversions and variations you can easily come up with are good for starting places. Plus, if you play a guitar track for a piece, it'll add a bit of a live element to it due to you not being able to program a guitar line.

Just my two cents.

I would say if you have time make sure you learn both the instruments, but go for the piano first, a lot of the melody construction is transferable and I just feel it will give you a head start on guitar.

this, if you can play the piano, you can play just about anything. it really helps putting the whole musical thing together in one's mind.

And it doesn't matter how big or small your hands are, I have tiny hands and short fingers and I've been playing the piano my whole life, from classical to jazz.

The piano has that unique way of helping you visualize the music you're playing, how it's build, how it works, which is why it'll open you up for any other musical instrument (learning the technique is the easy part anyways)
