Rent to own?

Just saw this in an ad on my facebook but apparently you can rent serum for 9.99 via splice. What do oyu guys think about this? Will it have an effect on piracy, and do you think it will counteract the cheap side of digital?

Re: Rent to own?

I guess, in terms of like wanting to be able to use the whole plugins without limits, it's a good idea. Many demos are (understandably) quite strict with what they'll allow the user to do. Being able to try out the full plugin for a low price seems like a decent idea on both sides of the consumer and the company. Consumers get to try out software that they're interested in without any limits and it'll incentivize them to purchase the full product if they like it enough, making it a plus for companies.

In the long term, though, at least for the consumer, it may be a bad thing because they'll rent out a few plugins and in the future, if they want to go back to an old project, they may not be able to look at that project if the rent period is over.

Anyways, since your question was about piracy, I do think this is a good idea overall but it really depends on the community to spread the word on this. It'll take a while but I'm sure it might help with piracy in the future. Although, I think people will continue to pirate regardless of how cheap something is. Games on Steam are hella cheap, and digital music on iTunes cost less than a bag of fucking chips. But people still pirate because they don't want spend money on other people's work. It's the sad truth.

yeah dude adobe has done this forever.

will it curb pirating? statistically speaking, no.

the "cheap side of digital"? "counteract"? are you asking if i expect amateur producers to lean toward subscription based VSTs in lieu of using crackedware/freeware? absolutely not. i expect this do nothing other than make up for losses by way of Xfer Records. tbh Serum IS cheap. it's great, i fucking love it and i use it all the time, but it's cheap. so I guess I'm not sure where you're getting at with that last question. what I do know: pirating software will never stop and it seems that in the majority of cases it is ethically sound. I read somewhere that most of the people who "pirate" end up paying for the product in the end if they decide to commit to it and publish output from it. allright, enough of this anarchistic tirade, why I am still typing? why are you still reading? why am I still going to post?

Re: Rent to own?

I started a thread on this over two weeks ago on here.

As for what I think about it..I personally think it's a good idea, as not everyone is dripping with cash to splash out on good, solid synths, which Serum obviously is.

The only downside..if it is even one..is the little Splice program you have to download and install, that logs in and checks each time you turn on your computer. I'm not sure how that works for those who are offline, but it's a pain to have yet another thing loading on boot-up.

Re: Rent to own?

This is great news, now we'll only need to crack the Splice rental program instead of cracking each VST separately.

Re: Rent to own?

I like subscription models for software because in my experience the development of those applications is always ongoing.

I had Lightroom for photography and it was cool and all. But the CS version is on LTS now so there's no new feature updates. Had the opportunity to get an annual educational subscription a couple of years ago and I've got to say the experience has been pretty impressive. Once that expired I've kept up the subscription because I use a lot of their software in my work, so 600 a year is pretty decent considering how often they've rolled out bugfixes and incremental features.

With regard to audio, I think it's awesome to see developers finally moving to this model because it's significantly more affordable to buy shit in monthly instalments. I reckon if there were software subscriptions for audio plugins when I was late teens / early 20s the software vendors would have made way more coin out of me

Re: Rent to own?

I rent Photoshop. 10 bucks a month. It's not rent to own, it's just renting.
