I've noticed when I give people a song, and they want to show me something similar, in my mind it is nowhere similar, so it is funny to see how people listen to music. It kind of shows a lot of people hear something completely different.
So, in this experiment I want to post a song, and have other people post a song they think is similar and I want to examine the similar elements and see what people "hear" when they listen to the original piece of music I post.
It should me kind of cool to see the results, and maybe help open up mine and other's ears to inspiration and what not.
So, I picked something with a bit of variety. Let's see what you guys post.
Well, to me it's because when the beat comes in, it gives the ambient bit the status of a build up before a drop, as expected in most songs. But the fact that they used an ambient build into the main "riff" is what makes it different from other stuff. While I was looking for stuff similar, I was trying to find something with both these aspects (ambient atmosphere and wonky beats). At first listen, I thought of Boards of Canada when hearing the very start of the track. But I guess the beat made the "wonky/skwee" proposition more salient.
I think .mute has killed it so far in similarity terms with that Spoons track, good shout.
If it's just "what does this remind you of?" then I have to say Team Shadetek's "the fax" popped into mind when I heard it for some reason, even though it's not that similar really.
It doesn't seem to be on Youtube, but you can hear it here.
