Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

well if i work on 1000...

akai MPC1000 350 (actually bought one for that once)
roland sp404 170 (what i bought mine for)
mikrokorg 150
fostex x-18h four track 20 (bought mine for that)
marrantz stereo tape deck 10 (bought mine for that)
a box of old as fuck cassettes to sample from - 5 (what i bought mine for lol)
tascam dr-07 - 130 (what mine bought for i)

at this point it comes to 835. i could get bonus points and get some speakers, wires and a mixer or i could just assume i have wires and headphones and get a used nord drum with the remainder

if what auto says is true and 1000 dollars is more like 600 quid id just forget about the MPC and the nord drum and get a mixer instead

i actually own an akai miniak so if i swapped it for the mikrokorg i basically own all the shit i need anyway ive even stupidly bought a korg dp006 digital 6 track thing if i didnt want to use tape

I am terrible at math. If someone wants to figure how to make it fair for exchange rates I will edit OP.

But does 750 get you the same gear in the UK as a $1,000 in the US? I mean I know to really figure it out is pretty unsimple (cost of living etc).

Good point, there are a lot of factors the influence this. I guess it doesn't really matter though, it's not the point of this thread to make an absolutely correct bill.
Just set yourself a limit and see what you can do with that

Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

As a mental exercise, let's see what we could get here if we ventured into modularland. This is probably stupid due to the cost-inefficiency and lack of benefits from modularity in a small system. Microbrute is probably essential, so we're looking at that + Happy Ending Companionship. At least modular cheats the rules by not factoring in the costs of cablespaghetti. :problemofficer:

$250: Arturia Microbrute (Used, price approximate but seems like one could get new from eBay at [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
.
)
$150: TipTop Audio Happy Ending Kit (New.)
$165: Make Noise Function (New.)
$140: Make Noise ModDemix (New.)
$200: Make Noise STO (New.)
$095: Synthrotek Atari Punk Console (New. Honestly just get something for $100. Anything. This was the first thing I found. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
is a contender.
)

Right on the money. Get everything used and actually be able to afford cables. Some stackables couldn't hurt. I'm certain you could get a bunch more if you were willing to DIY - Mindreader PCBs and some Piezo Mics could be a great investment in that case, if you could get the former from anywhere. That being said, you could probably make some fun noise with this.

Due to the nature of Modular systems and import taxes, I'd assume those from Europe can enjoy this for no less than a thousand euros. :problemofficer:

Just looking through current local classifieds...

Mackie 1604. 130$
Nord modular g1 keys 500 $
Yamaha rm1x 200$
Behringer Vverb pro 2496 (I swear they ripped off lexicon innards and slapped em in their enclosure) 80$
Remaining change on some controller such as a bcf or bcr.

No monitors... Cables... Hm.

Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

All gear from my local second-hand trading website. I could literally buy this setup right now for reals.

Behringer Xenyx 4-Channel mixer - 25 (dunno how you guys are hooking up your gear)
Roland MC-909 - 400 (brains behind the operation)
Atomosynth Mohika - 150 (because synth)
Arturia Minibrute - 250 (same reason)
Vox Stomplab II - 55 (gotta have some sort of effects)
M-Audio Keystation 49e - 20 (for the Mohika)

895
+cables n stuff

Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

All of you have such champagne tastes... you don't even account for cables or speakers which are quite expensive... here is what I would get.

$65 Behringer 802 Mixer
$100 used electric bass
$60 Alesis Midiverb
$150 Korg Volca Keys
$150 Used Sampler
$40 Used receiver and speakers
$100 used midi sequencer
$100 used compressor
$20 used crap midi controller
This comes to $885, leaving enough money leftover to buy cables.
I suppose you could probably cut the midiverb, the mixer, and possibly the compressor out if you found a multitrack that had those effects built in. However, I wouldn't attempt to build a rig without multitrack and effects as they have a huge effect on the final sound.

Oh, and there should be bonus points if anything uses floppy disks.

If this is champagne to you...

Alesis MMT-8 - $50-80
MicroKorg - $250-300
Zoom CDR-70 - $120
Alesis Micron - $250
Small Mixer - $200
cables - $50

I'd hate to taste what you're drinking!

You should give more concrete examples rather than just USED ITEM X.

Well, the rules said we didn't have to account for cables or speakers/headphones. I also included some good cans despite the "assume you have basic speakers/headphones" part. I'll let it go on the "used speaker and receivers" and "used crap MIDI controller" because there's really no need to be too specific there, but the rest of the generic "used item x" is pretty weak if you're going to criticize everyone for the choices they actually made

And everything I picked aside from the cans does at least double duty

So. After I finish up some projects I'm going to take up the 1,000 dollar setup EP/LP challenge with things I own. Might be a month or so, but sounds fun : )

That'd be pretty challenging for me. I'd have to play all the parts manually or program my Zillion to sequence the Blofeld, because the Octatrack would completely blow the budget (and would probably be illegal since mine was new and $1500+ )

Or just say fuck it and make it all with the OP-1, a couple Patchblocks, and the MS-100BT.

Yea. Sequencing is also my issues since I normally use Maschine. It is gonna be minimal...Korg ER1, MicroBrute, Volca Keys. + Mixer brings me to 741. Luckily I got both my DAT and Cassette deck for free, so I'm gonna be a dick and count that as $0USD lol

If I should take the challenge with the thing I own it would be impossible as I have no recorders apart from a Zoom H-1 that doesn't do multitrack.
I would have to use the mc-505 I got for free (and with a few broken buttons), a couple of guitar distorsions, maybe bass guitar played live and record the mixer output.
Way above my skillz...

I thought you had a mixer? Fuck multitracking! Just go straight into the zoom. Full steam ahead!
