Hardware Multi effects

I'm looking into a hardware multi effects processor to route sounds the MPC for resampling.
It should have a decent editability and choice of effects, but I know nothing of hardware effect boxes.

Gut feeling is that my best option would be to stick to an Ipad, but I wanted to hear some opinions...

Re: Hardware Multi effects

Are you talking about a guitar multi fx or something different ? Do you have a budget ?

Look around what line 6, zoom and boss can offer for a start maybe.

Pedal or rack?
ďStandardĒ effects, or weirder stuff?
The new line 6 hx are really tempting!

Re: Hardware Multi effects

Either pedal or rack, as for content, I'd like reverb, distortions, some delays.

I'm not 100% sure what can be achieved in the hardware world in when it comes to effects, so I'm trying to have a broad idea to then gauge it against the Ipad with AUM and a few effects...

Well AUM + AUFX + ElasticFX and Effectrix is going to be hard to beat.
But I would say you could do some fairly cool stuff with the line 6 pedals, the new one has options for synths too.
Or go all out and get the weirder boutique pedals, like the meris stuff, or get a second hand oto biscuit.

I am actually thinking of ditching a bunch of pedals and going the line 6 route, that thing even switches channels on guitar amps.

No single box competes with multiple boxes+a console with enough sends and enough channels. Then crossfeed effect signals in decaying feedback loops.

You're welcome.

Re: Hardware Multi effects

Budget? I've been mostly underwhelmed by hardware multifx units. My experience has been VSTs, sometimes even stock DAW ones, sound better than pedals. I've not really messed with iPad fx apps too much, but I feel like they are probably better than your pro-sumer racks and pedals.

Lexicon MX series is very usable for the price. Same with the Zoom CDR 70 pedal (actually for $99 its quite nice). Having used both these units extensively for about a year each, I went running back to software.

I hate to be this guy...but basically the only hardware FX units I miss are the Strymon El Capistan and the OTO Biscuit.

Re: Hardware Multi effects

The only thing that jumps to my mind are the Eventide things (I think they did a box with knobs and switches for synths, but it's still basically one of their pedals) and I don't think they're cheap. I don't even know what FX are on them either.

I know they've got that H9 pedal that can hold a bunch of FX algorithms (you can swap them out with a computer). But it only does one at a time. I think its about the price of one of the their single FX stomp boxes (Eventide Space etc)

I donít know, those meris pedals look amazing man. If I had 1200 bucks laying around I would get all 3 in a flash!
I do however have the software emulation of the oto biscuit and must say that thing is cool!

I'd expect a $400 dollar pedal to sound really good. I just don't think the newer pro-sumer stuff sounds that great versus software (nor does any I've used sound bad in a good way).
But you had me at software biscuit...

Re: Hardware Multi effects

Thanks guys, at the moment (ignoring the Empress Zoia) the closest to what I had in mind are the Eventide H9 max and the Ensoniq DP4.

But frankly, I think I might be better off with the Ipad, if I managed to sort midi sync via AUM/Audiobus...

Honestly, I wouldnít go the h9 route because of only loading one algorithm at a time.
How about empress? Their echo system pedal is really impressive!

I love my pedal bank.

Best ones:

Strymon Timeline
Strymon Big Sky
Erica Synth Acidbox III
Red Panda Raster
Red Panda Particle
WMD Geiger Counter

Analog Heat is nice, too.

I am tempted to try a Line 6 Firehawk FX.

Re: Hardware Multi effects

With most of the multi fx units, changing things on the fly is more difficult than with single pedals, but if you're happy to set a chain and use that they're o.k. I have a Boss VF-1 which are cheap to pick up and half rack, so are quite small. 200 presets + 200 user, which are mirrors of the of the presets to start with, but can be edited. Screen is big enough and logical, so editing from it is o.k. can do some mental stuff, although it can be a bit noisy.

I have the Zoom MS-70 CDR which is great for the money. It is also what I've used on the one synth challenge. I didn't use the Particle Reverb on the challenge, but this is a short demo of it (seems to be a favourite with a lot of people) but I did use a lot of the others + a couple of my own chains.

For distortion the Boss MD-2 does the trick for me. Having the high and low tone controls make it versatile. I used this on the track as well for kick, snare and the LFO bass. Sounds like this:

Have to say I really like this delay pedal.

I donít have the hx (yet?) but the fire hawk is their older modeling.
And if you donít need the guitar amp models, donít get the firehawk.
Otherwise the line 6 modulation and time based fx are good.
