Leaning heavily toward a surface book now, its more money but the screen size is nice, the extra USB port is good and it still seems more useful on the go than a MacBook Pro. Plus Mac is kinda pissing me off lately. That touch strip crap on the new laptops is so stupid!
buy A laptop with a touchscreen then youll get better speck for half the price of a surface pro

Re: Surface pro?

Second to the touch screen laptop. I get it, but portability and connecting to a hardware setup? I don't see what a Surface has to offer for portability/connectivity that a laptop does not.

If you really want a tablet, Surface > iPad for power.

Re: Surface pro?

personally, i hate touch screens. Buttons are so much better! They're always in the same place. If you aren't lazy and learn all your key commands, I guarantee you will smoke any dweeb with a touch screen when it comes to working speed.

A good example is a piano. Think about playing a touch screen one versus a real one.. Gross. Buttons ftw.

Re: Surface pro?

triple post sorry..

but look, if you want something to speed up your work flow, get a microkontrol or something for your laptop. Pretty sure it has ableton templates? You can control macros and transport and such. Being able to close your eyes and tweak some knobs is gonna blow a touch screen out of the water IMO. just IMO.. who knows

Re: Surface pro?

1 I have a push 2 an octatrack and an MPC and a bass station 2 so trust me I know about the advantages of hardware, no argument there. I also use an iPad for synths and actually really like the touch screen for tweaking the patches etc. But I hate iOS, all as previously mentioned in this thread. Also comparing a piano to an iPad is asinine! I am comparing a touch screen to using a mouse! Touch screen wins!

2 again push > micro control, all I am saying is I will be in the market for a new laptop soon enough, pretty much made up my mind on a surface book! Because again loading synths and effects into reason rack and tweaking them on a touch screen seems much better than using a mouse.

3 I've mostly made up my mind, I don't know why this thread was resurrected or why I still respond to it!

I'd be interested to hear how it pans out with the Surface after you've been using it for a few months. Never used one but have noticed them popping up in the wild at an increasing rate.

Re: Surface pro?

I have a surface pro 4 for work and it's pretty neat. I think it should be more than powerful enough to run Ableton properly. Strongest downside is probably the relatively short battery life.
