Aeolian mode. Phrygian and Dorian modes are cool too. But has anything good ever come out of Locrian mode? It just sounds wrong.

I've heard it used somewhat effectively in drone music once, but I can't remember where. Other than that, it's hard to end a song in Locrian because the diminished i chord wants to resolve.

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

G minor. Maybe because it's the first minor key I locked down, but it's one I default to more than any other.

I've been sneaking some F and A minor in occasionally, but less often. I don't play with modes, or at least I couldn't explain what I'm doing because I don't know their names so much as I understand the idea.

I highly approve. Try adding in C minor with your G minor progressions.

G minor is nice. Modes are easy to learn. Just try to memorise them like the alphabet.

I Ionian, II Dorian, III Phrygian, IV Lydian, V Mixolydian, VI Aeolian, VII Locrian

The Roman numerals indicate how the mode relates to a major scale. Modes use the same keys as the major scale they relate to which is the Ionian mode. For example a Phrygian mode in C major would start from the 3rd note of C major (EFGABCDE). Have fun playing with modes!

Locrian can be cool for evil sounding riffs (used a lot in some metal sub genres), and for a breakdown or something that 's supposed to sound weird or dark. Since the I chord is diminished, you can't really write a chord progresion that resolves in a satisfying way, so it's pretty useless for melodic/catchy stuff.

Whatever note sounds fine at that moment.

I like composing in A though, know my way around it and I can always pitch shift midi input for my needs.

E flat minor is my favorite, but I don't often use it anymore because my MIDI controller is only a 25-key one.

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

Microtonal scale is my thing currently. That slightly-out-of-tune sound shakes up my billys somethin' fierce.

I sometimes dabble in some gypsy scale, for that dank middle-eastern jive sound the kids are all about these days.

I like A minor, plainly because I make depressing music and Am is a pretty sad sounding key

I'd really like to start composing in microtones. How do you go about doing it? How do you choose a microtone scale ? Do you retune you synths?

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

i personally like Eb minor or F# major when i play my saxophone. I guess i just enjoy the fingerings of them, they seem to be easy to play. perhaps simply due to repetition because i liked how it sounded at first.

personally, i think the octave u choose matters more than the key.

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

For many years I have liked Eflat minor and I'm really comfortable with it. It's a lot of the black keys. But unfortunately, my current MIDI controller is only a 25-key one, so I've had to change to some other keys so that I don't have to use the octave switch button as much. Lately it's been D major

I tend to gravitate to B major/Ab minor or some mode of it. Alternatively, D major.

I just steal the first two chords from whatever song I'm addicted to at the moment, then fuck around from there until it sounds horrible.

Definitely decent for some dark/metal stuff. Good for transitional sections too. I agree with your point about it being unsuitable for melodic/catchy stuff.
