Strings

Ay!

Music networking sites make it really easy to find new music these days. I would like to search around for a lot of sad string music. The strings can be either synthesized or sampled, or recorded live for all I care. Anybody have some suggestions on where to start?

Re: Strings

Welcome!

I think you just replied to your own question - either buy some commercial library (Eastwest, Vienna Symphonic Library, Sonivox, IK Multimedia Miroslav, etc etc), synthesize your own (or use "string synths", sample classical music (like Venetian Snares, etc), or record your own strings.

Here is a free one. Sad strings? Stick to minor scale.

Re: Strings

I'm actually searching for music to listen to, not to sample with.

Awesome, thanks! Modern electronic stuff would be great too, if you have any suggestions.

Re: Strings

For modern stuff with melancholic strings try out Alex Taylor And The Evil Eye's stuff.

Re: Strings

It was a small ensemble, three aussie musicians i believe. Not sure what's become of them after their debut album, i never bothered checking.

There's a lot of post-rock music with strings though if that's relevant, and post-rock usually means melancholic, although quite predictably so.

Re: Strings

Yeah, I've listened to plenty of post-rock. I tend to continue to like most of it even if it's boring. The thing is, I want some stuff that's more stripped down, without percussion even. Just a cello, some violins, and maybe a piano. I guess I should probably start checking some soundtracks maybe...

Re: Strings

If you're ready to give something a good listen, don't miss Black Tape For a Blue Girl's 'Remnants of a Deeper Purity'. Given the chance, it's a life changing experience, in terms of music life of course. A real masterpiece.

Re: Strings

All variations on the same theme but these are from a film called Wonderland.

The composer is Michael Nyman.

This one is just Nyman and his piano, no strings, but same theme as the others and live.

The entire score is brilliant.

Totally not everyone's cup of tea, but I absolutely love Penderecki's Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima.
