Joshua Hernandez: I was there the moment that mask was created. The story is simple really — I got a file over AIM chat. This one actually (pictured here). He did it in 3d studio max or something. Also right before this he was “dead_mau5″. The first words out of my mind into the chat were, “This is a bad idea, you’re going to get sued by Disney.” His position was genuinely disconnected from Disney’s icon, but still had the signature bravado he has today. I wish I had the logs but I remember that conversation because of how important it was at the time. It was the first time he had done something I thought could lead to trouble. Back then I didn’t know what I was doing as a manager. But I knew it was tempting fate.

Disney has to oppose in order to retain their own trademarks. This is how trademarks work. If you own a trademark, and someone else wants/gets one that is somewhat similar to yours, you have to oppose or you could use the rights to your own.
Trademarks are different than copyrights.
It has nothing to do with Disney being evil or Zimmerman being an ass - this is just the way Trademarks work. TMs are only used for commerce, and to maintain their use you must show that you are using them, and you must oppose others who use a mark that might be too similar to the one you already have.
