Can you synchronize two laptops running Live?

Just asking. I wonder if and how this is possible.

Re: Can you synchronize two laptops running Live?

It should be doable via midi, one is master the other is slave

Re: Can you synchronize two laptops running Live?

i've been looking into the same thing, and i've been unable to find a solution via ReWire to accomplish this. since I did not want to get involved with external hardware to send/receive midi, I am doing this by using Max devices to convert midi into OSC messages, which are sent wirelessly. this way, i can have any number of devices listening to receive the incoming osc packets, which are unpacked back into midi data on the receiving laptop.

latency is still under 10ms on both machines with this OSC setup.

Re: Can you synchronize two laptops running Live?

Plug midi out of computer 1 into midi in of computer 2.
Plug midi out of computer 2 into midi in of computer 1.

Or, maybe, just do one of the steps, it depends of what computer you want to be master.

Go to Live's preferences ---> Midi/Sync.

Turn the "sync" thing of your favorite midi interface "on".

Should work. It worked, here.

Re: Can you synchronize two laptops running Live?

I wouldn't really trust midi. I'm sure it's possible, but I don't think midi is accurate enough to be playing two computers as instruments in sync. A certain someone uses SMPTE to coordinate syncing equipment live, but I'm not exactly sure how it's implemented.

Re: Can you synchronize two laptops running Live?

syncing two laptops with live is kind of a hit and a miss, because live is infamous for having inaccurate drifting midi.

Re: Can you synchronize two laptops running Live?

It might be tighter with an external clock source. Assuming you have two identical soudcards and similar laptops, latency would be the same and you would not have to deal with a bunch of latency crap.

THIS.

yes, it can be done, no its not super-great.

using an external midi clock device to have them both follow is your best bet if you need it to be really reliable. I use an MCP500 for this. with the MPC i get midi clock drift, but it is minute. somewhere between .01 and .10 of a BPM

MPC500 midi out to computer 1, then through computer 1 to computer 2.

if there are minor timing issues the latency offset can be used, but i'm rarely trying to work in a manner that has required it.
