industrial vocal distortion

hey everyone, as I was drifting off to sleep last night I had this NIN song stuck in my head. I'm wondering how to recreate the vocal distortion characteristics in the scream at the very beginning:
">
It sounds like time-stretching artifacts to me, which leads me to assume it was sampler-based noodling from the gear he'd have been using. But it also sounds kinda granular, so I don't really know.

I'm looking to recreate this sort of hollow, unreal and clicky texture type distortion. I tend towards tubes and such, but am looking for things to explore that give more of a clipping, breaking apart sort of feel. Any tips on how to recreate this effect, or anything similar greatly appreciated. ~: )

Re: industrial vocal distortion

"Breaking apart"? Maybe try a bit depth reducer or a sample rate reducer, or both in conjunction ([Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
). Reducing bit depth to a very low value can create some interesting glitchy and "low battery" circuit bending sounds.

Edit: I wrote bit rate. I mean bit depth. I'm tired as fuck.

oh weird, the link didn't work. trying again:
Big man with a gun - Nine Inch Nails
the part right at the start

evelon, it doesn't really sound like downsampling to me. it's almost got a tape quality

I wasn't refering to the track. I was refering to your "breaking apart" bit, which bit depth reduction (not downsampling) kinda does.
Just giving you the initial idea.

Yeah, it (NIN vocal thing) does sound like a warbly cassette. Try some chorus and some random (noise) LFO on pitch. Set amount and speed to taste.

Re: industrial vocal distortion

Could be various guitar pedals. I'm sure lots on that album were run through his huge collection.

Re: industrial vocal distortion

the effect at the beginning could be done with chorus but i'm pretty sure it's done with pitchshifter just play at the same time 3 version of the same sample with different tuning (like + 0 +1 + 5 )
