I bought a used Alesis QS 7.1, which of course is the ROMpler. Then I got a Korg ES-1, which has been a load of fun to program. I added a Alesis SR-16 in the middle, which I don't necessarily need, but it does do drums a little better than the ES-1 and has a lot more drum sounds in there.

I'm using freeware DAWs right now and have a couple loaded on my Compaq laptop, which is pretty basic and will not even run the trial version of Reactor. I've hooked up the MIDI cables to the QS 7 and then to the Korg to see what happens and that has been amusing.

A friend of mine had a Moog Rogue back in the 80s. That was pretty fun to play with, but I think I'll go for something with some polyphony.

I considered getting an Ensoniq Mirage that is for sale in my area for cheap, but those sound really finicky and again, it's just another sample-driven synth with some filters, which I have in a newer version. Some Alesis Microns are out there, too, which might work for me.

What looks interesting is those modular controllers you also mentioned.

The Akai Miniak is reshelled Alesis Micron (which is a compact Alesis Ion), with better controls, better keys and a handy gooseneck mic. It also costs less than the Micron (it was orginally quite a lot more expensive, but it didn't sell very well, presumably because it's not as traditionally 'sexy' looking as the micron). Whenever someone says they are going to buy a first synth or a MicroKorg, I badger them to buy one of these instead. They are an absoloute bargain, and I find it much more versatile than pretty much anything else in that price range I've used (and that includes the K-Station).

Thanks! I do remember reading about that. A lot of these rebranding attempts seem to end up like that, which is fine by me. I'll start looking around for the Akai. I have found the Microns for around $300 locally.

Looks like one in my old town Austin right now for sale for $290.

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

My love for the Micron is famous around here, but over the past couple of months I've grown to like the MicroKorg more. The Micron can be too deep for the controls it offers, where as the MK's matrix UI shows you everything you can do at a glance. I've recreated a lot of my favorite Micron sounds on the MK, and, actually, for once in about 4 years my Micron isn't plugged in.

I find programming on the MK to be more fun, and I imagine the same would be true about the Miniak. What do you like about the controls more? It looks like it just substitutes the two sliders for wheels, and everything else is about the same.

I really want to gut my Micron and turn it into a rack mount somehow, or chop off the keyboard and turn it into a desktop.

Ha ha ha! I'm typing all of this stuff while texting sexy talk to the girlfriend and losing track of what I wanted to say where.

"Oh yeah, baby. I have some great analog filters."

I like the controls more precisely because it does away with those damn sliders. The fact it has a second modwheel is great too. More synths should do that. It also has more a more standard shift+keys funcionality. The controls certainly aren't the selling point, it's just a slight improvement over the micron, which is understandably more 'compact', but less practical. There are good editors for both, though - which I'd use anyway if making sounds from scratch.

I don't dislike microKorgs, and features-wise they're not too dissimilar. I've just never heard anything particularly interesting come out a microkorg before, while I've heard some fairly crazy things on my miniak. I just think that with the Miniak (or the micron) you're getting something a bit cheaper, but a bit less boring and (in my opinion) sexier - so I recommend it every time.

lol it may be a cheezy demo, but he did make some great sounds with it. it also has the same sound engine as the regular supernova, but its going to cost much less because of the size

Yeah - I think it looks really cool.

I'm all about mini-synths.

Hopefully it can be powered by batteries.

not too sure it can be powered by batteries, check the product page here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
i wasnt able to find anything about battery power, but the other specs look pretty promising! it can be usb powered tho, which is useful for me as all of the plugs in my room are taken up lol.

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

The Mininova is looking to be a pretty good deal, considering that it is around $500 and comes free with the editing software. The Roland GAIA is $700 and doesn't include software. And how U gonna drop the beat with that Gaia, huh? OMFG.

I think I'm going to wait for one of you guys to buy a Gaia and then let us know what you think about it. I'm beginning to believe that a lot of the reviews out there are clever fakes from the manufacturers.
