(blofeld: hell no microkorg: hell no)two sucky synths right there. minibrute: that thing looks bad ass. any Nord- yes Also look at Virus A,B,C roland GAIA roland JP8000, MS2000 is great but the roland sh 201 is very similar and sounds much fatter. moog little phatty is just outside your reach but great also check out the slim phatty, bad ass. Oberheims are great too but they are tricky to program. Same with the old esoniq esq-1 which is super cheap and BADASS.

im looking at the novation mininova right now, which is perfectly priced for me, and has a great sound. ill definitely check out the slim phatty too.

So the microkorg gets a hell no and the ms2000 is great? Blofeld a sucky synth? You sure you're not high?

Wrong and wrong.

No such thing as a sucky synth. Only a sucky synthesist.

If you can't make what you want to make on the Blofeld and the Microkorg, you can't do it at all, or on anything. These are two of the most flexible VA synths around. Both are also very different - the Blofeld is bright and very hi-fi sounding, while the MK/MS2000 engine is very dusty and lo-fi sounding. The combination of the two is just about perfect.

Does anyone here actually own a Blofeld? It would be nice to hear some sounds you have created on it if so.

Yep. Used it a lot on the video I posted in the Hardware thread (mainly the Vibe/sine wave sounds), and on this EP:

Also, my part (track 3) of this split EP was done entirely on the Blofeld.

It's definitely not a toy. It's a tool. It's only a toy if you use it and treat it like one. I made a whole album using it as my main sound source.

Here's a combo patch I made using the Blofeld and Minibrute:

I just love the Blofeld's super clean, digital sound. I don't understand it when people say "it sounds digital" as a negative, as if sounding digital is somehow bad when compared to analog.

Yes - it doesn't sound analog. Guess why? Because it's not an analog synth! It's a digital subtractive wavetable synthesizer, and that's what it sounds like.

The reason I make these claims: Blofeld, great synth amazing capabilities, Horrible glitchy show ruining interface. It freezes and you have to reset it, try doing that in the middle of a show through a 20,000 watt PA. It doesnt sound digital if you dont want it to, In fact the blofeld was one of the most powerful synths I have ever owned but again I sold it because the interface and programming was shit and everytime I contacted blofeld they were busy working on something else, little manpower over there. And microkorg? Well if you want to hunch over a tiny synth decoding little digital symbols because the screen doesnt fit labels, well be my guest. I had one for 6 years and hated it. Sounds alot more digitally and tinny than my MS2000 and has midget keys. MS2000 gets a go because it has everything laid out in front of you. You can learn synsthesis and have fun doing it, programming on blofeld and microkorg is slow and less intuitive. And there you go.

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

Also I want to say that nowadays when i look at a hardware synth I ask myself, why would I want an external synth and what does it do that a vst synth and midi controller cant? One answer to this is that analog synths sound way the hell fatter than digital synths and computer synths. Analog filters are unbeatable. ANALOG ANALOG ANALOG gives you fat sound that you cant get from digital oscillators that "MIMIC" analog oscillators. The next thing you get from a hardware synth, a good one IMO, is a fully functionable layout of the synth. I dont think you would be very happy with a compressed interface like the microkorg, It is so much better to have all of the options available to you at once. So even if you settle for a monophonic analog synth, you can still get all of the digital bells and whistles that you would sacrifice in a vst synth on your computer. There is no substitution for fat analog bass, dont settle for gimics.

Analog is not much fatter than digital or even softsynths. This is an example I made. The difference between a $2000 analog synth and a softsynth is hardly noticable if we talk oscs and filters:

The fatness in analog comes from age, detuning/calibration of filters and the recording. All of which can be emulated almost perfectly.

Hardware synths are fun for live performances. When you do gigs with no laptop, the blofeld is really handy because you can address 16 patches seperately from external gear. I agree it would be more fun if each function would have a dedicated knob.

You can always just buy an analogue filter and run your digital synths through that if you want a more analogue sound.

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

I've never had a problem with the Blofeld's interface, and since upgrading to the newest firmware it has never crashed.

And I don't care about analog or digital. They're just tools. It's all about how the musician uses them.

And you're still wrong about the Microkorg. I don't hunch over it. I use it like the awesome synth it is. If you'd like to hear how awesome it can sound let me know and I'll link you to my last album. If not, no big deal.

It sounds exactly like the MS2000, which I have as well.
