Black Metal Recommendations?

Can I get some Black Metal Recommendations?

Felt this was the best place to post this, I have almost zero experience with the genre but what I've heard I've been really into.

Anyhow, thanks in advance. I like alot of progression, drum tracks with alot of crashes to counter the double bass, instrumentals preferred as I find vocals annoying as fuck.

Re: Black Metal Recommendations?

Nobodies mentioned the staples that are Death and Dimmu Borgir yet, either! Although it's hard to avoid vocals, so much metal has them in some form or another(although with groups like Cryptopsy it's hard to tell they're there sometimes! x3)

Anaal Nathrakh's version of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is awesome

Ive seen Gorgoroth, 1349, Zyklon and Cephalic Carnage (playing support for Akercocke) live, I personally wasnt into all the technical 5 string bass shit going down with Cephalic Carnage, but they were definitely very 'good' - just not something I was into..

Dimmu Borgir did become pretty crap pretty quickly imo too

bands like Death and Morbid Angel are considered to be influence on BM though - I think theres even a Death song on that Fenriz compilation...

Perm btw although there usually are the odd one or two instrumental songs on BM albums, the 'orcish' vocals are considered so important an element of BM that it is pretty rare.

EnslaveD are great too - you might like the recent(ish) album RUUN - its very hypnotic and musical - i know that they became more Viking Metal but they undeniably have that cold feeling in some of their stuff especially that stuttery bit in the middle of Havenless which I really like. Isa is another great song.

Bathory (RIP) - some early stuff was full on BM

and as much as people like to slag the way they look, and I know its more 'Blackened Death' than BM (even though they are from Bergen), but I love ImmortaL - especially Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark). Also the whole Sons Of Northern Darkness album are great - especially the title song - I love it.

btw does anyone have any Old Funeral stuff? - I'd love to hear what they were like...

Re: Black Metal Recommendations?

Some personal favorite albums:

Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale
Bathory - Bathory
Borknagar - The Archaic Course
Dimmu Borgir - Spiritual Black Dimensions, Death Cult Armageddon
Emperor - Wrath Of The Tyrant, Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
Old Man's Child - Sons Of Satan Gather For Attack (split)
Ulver - Bergtatt, The Madrigal Of Night

I kind of like the more "nu" black metal stuff, which was apparently back in the day frowned upon as "less brutal" but whatever, I think these are generally the more interesting bands.

Similarly, there is Swedish Death Metal, which is, stylistically, VERY close to Black Metal, though a little more emphasis on technical ability as opposed to just speed and harshness, and the subject matter is FAR different. Personally, while I know far fewer bands, these are actually some of my favorite of all metal bands...

At The Gates - The Red In The Sky Is Ours, Terminal Spirit Disease
Hypocrisy - Abducted (probably not their best, but it's all I have of them sadly...)
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day
Opeth - EVERYTHING! (I love these guys, their first two albums are more Black Metal, where their next couple are somewhat progressive Death Metal, and their last couple of albums are almost, Heavy Progressive... Still a great band who are incredibly technically proficient but also very good song witters who ALSO make interesting sounds... phew...)
Dark Tranquility is also very good but I don't know them very well.

I also really like Napalm Death, Pig Destroyer, and See You Next Tuesday, though these are generally considered Grindcore or just straight up Death Metal.

but I suppose as a very general rule of thumb, DM vocals would usually be more gutteral as opposed to 'orcish' style, also in 'trve' old BM the music would be a lot less technical than DM with a lot less catchy or even moshable riffs, sounding more kinda punky actually musically (IMO)- also BM production tends to almost on purpose have absolutely NO mid-range...

also I suppose thematically that DM would often have been about aggresion/violence/dismemberment etc. with tight riffs, whereas BM would often be more overtly 'satanic' or pagan and often gothic in feeling, with big wall of sound type strumming, often 'feeling' very cold...

also as another generalisation, in terms of Norse Metal, BM was originally (although obviously Quorthon was Swedish), a Norwegian thing, whereas DM would be American or English, and indeed Swedish with the 'Gothenburg' sound etc.. In fact the founders of the 'second wave of BM' i.e. Euronymous, Varg, Fenriz etc. saw BM as a reaction to what they thought was 'trendy' (?) DM. When Deicide got a petrol bomb or something thrown at them at a gig in the height of this 'wave' (I cant remember if the gig was in Norway or Sweden tbh) - they immediately blamed it on Black Metal people.

anywayz there are a million and one crossovers in any of those descriptions I gave lol

Also, at least in the old days, the Black Metal guys were a hell of a lot more violent... I mean, you didn't see Cannibal Corpse stabbing each other in the back... literally...

Also, and this is probably up for debate... but at least in terms of traditional Death Metal VS traditional Black Metal, Black Metal tends to be a bit more "serious", both in the subject matter and in the way the bands present themselves? With Death Metal, you had guys talking about fucking corpses with knives and stuff, and, at least personally, I don't think anyone meant it LITERALLY. But the Black Metal guys, you kind of believe they believe whatever it is they were saying... I dunno.. I guess this is sort of subjective...

Then you have the Swede Death Metal guys who took it to a whole other place with abductions and politics and all sorts of crazy stuff...
