Re: Muahahaha

So not only is Electronic Musician proper terminology (see expert source linked), but also, clearly Mr. P. R. himself says that EDM is in fact dead.

Re: Muahahaha

I've actually never listened to his music (admittedly due to willfull ignorance based on the audience he has catered to and the festivals he's played at), but i heard his new direction and it's frankly not that bad. Not my flavor (at least at the moment) but I actually can relate to what he said about EDM (i know, I know we all hate that term but let's face that it is a generally accepted definition of a brand -- notice I didn't say "genre" -- of music) as a whole being structurally confining, because he's totally right. I am glad to see a musician, albeit a mainstream one, break out of their box and feel comfortable and happy writing music "again", implying he wasn't enjoying it before. I can relate. In fact I'm searching for myself musically right now and it is bittersweet and tough to experience sometimes because you go through this "everything I used to love is wrong to me now" type of experience that is kind of soul crushing.

I also really like some of the things he says about music, which I totally vibe with,... Such as him gravitating toward imperfect sounding music that isn't focused on being "producer porn"... Good chord progressions/lyrics/soul are more important and I actually really appreciate that.

Look whether you hate his music or love it (I feel neither, really) you have to admit he sounds like an all right fella who knows his way around music and production. I mean I could totally see myself geeking out about composition stuff for hours over some beers, maybe even jam at a piano with him and feel like I was hanging with any one of my music buddies.

I get this is IDMf but I think negative comments about this guy are kind of unfounded. You're all welcome to your opinion but if you actually read his responses you will see that he's just a regular music making dude who is just trying to grow in his field like any one of us. Plus he seems super nice so I don't get where all the hate comes from, seriously.

Numerical you should totally do an AMA.

Yea..I mean if the guy is legitimately leaving behind the sound that made him famous that is pretty ballsy in time where the flavor of the month can get left behind in a few weeks. Also calling out that the music doesnt have as much substance as he would like...

Re: Muahahaha

I got to know Porter Robinson fairly recently when someone posted Sea of Voices. I liked it, nice melodies, nice sounds, you know the kind of vibe I dig.
So I also read through the AMA when it appeared.

In the AMA someone posted that his track Language had made him cry, so I got intrigued and checked that out too. Also an okay track (imo), the melody is nice but it sounds a bit flat overall, there wasn't that much variation/real build-up.
The one thing I was really wondering though, is why the fuck he added a drum before and after the track. Like really, that drumloop is not used anywhere else, the track ends and suddenly he restarts that drum. It's ridiculous.

Until a bit further he said this:
Quote:
a lot of my angst about EDM came from my songwriting process. i think that EDM, in order to do its job in its intended setting (a DJ set), has requirements to make it 'work'. the most effective electro tracks have a 30-second buildup, where the chord returns to the root note, with risers, maybe a rising vocal, a snare roll - there are moves you HAVE to do in an 'EDM' track to make it work.
And it got to me, he added that drumline for the sole of it being used in a DJ-set. Really? How fucked up is your type of music when you sacrifice the arrangement for a DJ?
Are this guys so bad at picking up a beat?

One of the biggest things that made me lose interest in a lot of genres right there: That fuckin overly DJ-friendly intro/outro shit

Re: Muahahaha

@fid

I don't think anyone is really being negative towards this particular guy.

My intended points were:
#1 - look a mainstream guy is using the term musician instead of producer.
#2 - a mainstream guy feels that EDM is dead/done.

Both should have plenty of conversation available.
I really wasn't very clear and my tone was definitely asshattish.

How do we get these IDMF AMAs happening?

Re: Muahahaha

@Oatbag I get it. And yeah both those topics are something to discuss, since I see some holes in em, therefore I'll add my thoughts in to your deep, dark holes whether you like it or not...

1: I'm pretty liberal when it comes to distinguishing between the terms producer and musician... To me the line is pretty blurred and the two are interchangeable; however, I know some people do care more for the cement dicks (semantics). I think that someone who composes music, even if they don't play a "real" instrument, is easily known as a musician. Also I don't get how him being a "mainstream guy" has anything to do with him calling himself a musician instead of a producer. I rarely play instruments anymore, yet I am a classically trained musician, however I devote most of my time in music to production. Does that make me not a musician?

As for 2: I believe I have read on many occasions about how mainstream DJs and producers have been talking about edm dying out for years (including deadmau5, Rusko, and skrillex, yet the former tends to waver back and forth, his twitter feed makes him seem very inconsistent). I really think this is a symptom of their own interests in the genre waning, and like Porter Robinson, are looking to grow and move outside their niches. It's a natural musical progression in the life of an artist IMO. I know some of you might scoff at my labeling them artists, but I don't think it's fair to nullify someone as an artist just because a lot of people like their music and you don't.

FFS...like when Skream announced he was done making Dubstep...all the sudden the genre wasn't relevant anymore and it was "dead".

Mainstream festival/big room/EDM music isn't going to magically disappear. I agree when these people announce a genre is dead...I think it is more about their personal interest more than a general lack of interest.
