What is the best bang for buck hardware synth?

I have a MicroKorg XL.. not really enjoying it though.. but maybe that is because I have no idea how to use it lol.. no ASDR keys, no filters or anything.. it is kind of a weird board.

The MKXL has at least 1 ADSR and at least 1 Filter.

It's a very basic digital subtractive synth, with lots of menus. Have you read the manual?

The MicroKorg is a good synth, you'll have a hard time doing better in that price range. Have you tried using a VST editor?

Yes. Please don't ask questions until you've read the manual.

Also, based on some one of your other threads about chords, it might be best for you to take a few months learning about music and instruments before asking how to make specific kinds of music and synths. Buy some books on theory and synthesis, READ manuals, practice, practice, practice, and....oh yeah, practice!

Save your money, get an ms2000r, you're not all that far off as it is.

Re: What is the best synth for under $200-$300?

If you have the cpu spare then I would suggest something like DIVA over any hardware synth for such a low price point.

I would go as far as saying that even free VSTi's such as Synth1 are better instruments than things like the MicroKorg etc. Stuff like the MS2000 at least has a good range of controls but even then, the sound isn't anything better than todays software. If you was asking 'whats the best synth for $2,000 - $3,000???' then you have got a discussion, but a $200 hardware synth???? Maybe in 1985.....

If you absolutely must go hardware then at least buy good hardware. Doepfer Dark Energy, DSI Mopho/Tetra, Moog Minitaur & Little Phatty, Oberheim SEM, Elektron Analog4, Virus Snow, Blofeld are all beautiful (and different) sounding instruments and are as cheap as they come and are all approx 3-4x your budget. I am basing that around uk prices though so ymmv.

Just MHO.

Dont know anything about hardware but it would be impossible to go wrong with buying either Alchemy or Massive if you like designing sounds

Re: What is the best synth for under $200-$300?

@Grain Bastard: the Blofeld and the mopho are only about 100.00 more than what he has now, not 3 to 4 times more. Also I agree about the micro Korg but the ms2000 is a solid investment for anyone looking to learn synthesis. The ms2000r was my first synth and while yes there are better options sound wise what it taught me was worth much more than the 350.00 I paid for it.

Alchemy all the way. Sample import, morphing, VA, additive, it's got it all and you get like gory gigs of samples when you purchase the license, which you can get secondhand over on KVR if you check the classifieds. I paid 1/2 price for my license and it's the most curent version.

Alchemy sounds pretty good. So would the hardware equivalent be a rompler/sampler synth with effects? It doesn't seem to do waveform synthesis.

Re: What is the best synth for under $200-$300?

The hardware equivalent of Alchemy would probably be several thousand dollars due to all of it's features. It's VA is awesome, surprisingly analogesque, and it's not so much a ROMpler but a sound design tool with which you can layer and morph between four samples.

It also handles granular, and can turn pictures into sound that you can draw new sound into and you can also draw your own wav forms, glitch loops and a mess of other shit.

The list goes on and on and on.

Oh yeah and it does additive synthesis also.

To me, for hw, MS2000 and XV-3080 have been my best acquisitions for that money.

Re: What is the best synth for under $200-$300?

It depends on what you expect of a synth. I had a kawai k3 for $200 which was filling the gap of analog sounds I couldn't get from vst's. Maybe you can find a cheap novation ks if you want more knobs to play with. But don't expect that buying all kinds of hardware instantly lets you make better music. As others already said, the microkorg is one of the best sounding synths in that range.

Re: What is the best hardware synth under $200-$300?

When I went nuts building a hardware set up up there was a hug learning curve to deal with to get back to where I was working just ITB. So consider that. Steeboo speaks the truth. But now I wouldn't go back to completely ITB set up.

My love for the Microkorg and MS2000 grows each time I use them. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Re: What is the best hardware synth under $200-$300?

Honestly, you can do a lot with very little given enough creativity. I've done a large portion of my new music with an SP-202, Alpha Juno 1 + guitar pedals + a Midiverb II, and live guitar, and dry
Samples arranged in Live. Don't get me wrong, Alchemy and soft synths are extremely powerful, but coming from a live music background, I can only do so much ITB before I feel burnt out.

But getting back to the question, pick up something you can actually try out before buying it. I got my Allha Juno 1 because the pads sounded awesome to me. There's a lot of advice on here about saving money and getting a really expensive synth, but you can never buy creative thinking.

Well some advice, not a lot.

The ms2000r, Blofeld, and Mopho are all very reasonably priced.

Indeed they are, sorry for over generalizing, I was referring mostly to IDMf as a whole and not necessarily the contents of this thread.
