Any tips/preferences when mixing in mono?

I accidentally did my first mix down in mono last month. I turned it on to check, saved, left, forgot I had it on and did my whole mix that way when I came back, then only turned it off when I was printing the mix to go and master it. I was really happy with the results, ended up doing it for a few more projects since then. But, I find it doesn't help that much with some projects.

Is there certain times you find it more helpful than others? Do you only mixdown in mono when you're aiming for a certain sound? I guess I'm just curious what your thoughts and processes are when it comes to this sort of thing.

For some of my mixes, mixing in mono is the only way to get a good mix of levels and eq. It's a good technique.

well i love mixing in mono. Check out the brainworx freebie bx_solo. You can listen MID (mono) Sides (mono) Left (mono), right (mono) and both channels in mono of course. So in some way you can hear your mixes from 6 different angles. it is a really good technique.

I *ALWAYS* mix in mono first, and then adjust. hell of a lot harder to get a great sounding mix that way, but therein lies its strength. I also have a terrible laptop-ish speaker wired in mono for referencing.

Im a big fan of getting a first mix of levels, eq, and often fx sends, while in mono. And sometimes with different speaker or environment IRs on the main bus.

For me, I like the way it focuses my attention on how the composition and emotional components of the track translate.

Then when I switch to stereo on the studio monitors or headphones, most of the heavy lifting has been done.

Mixing in mono I think is especially useful for mixing bass, because a lot of bass sounds have a large impact in stereo but lose a lot of their strength in mono. It helps you separate out frequencies for your bass so it comes out cleaner in the overall mix.

I now have it set up so that I have mid/side control on almost everything. Love it. I still end up keeping lots of things mono, but I'm experimenting with for instance a kick that's mono but has one (foley) layer panned towards the sides... or leaving fundamentals mono and the rest stereo.

Like if you sidechaining a kick with a compressor.. you could duck the whole sound.. or just do on the mids and leave the sides untouched for a less pumping effect.

Couple of years ago I became a big proponent of mixing in mono. My method is to hit mono on my interface mixer and pan everything to my right monitor and turn off the left monitor so that I only listen to one speaker. Also I mix on really quiet level, my levels are that low that if someone rustle with their clothes I won't hear what I'm mixing. This works extremely well because if I make something sound exciting, big, wide and deep in mono on low levels, it will sound amazing everywhere. In this mono phase I finish, let say, 80% of my mix. There is also worth mentioning couple of "small" but actually "big" steps in this mono mixing process. First one is that I always write (with pen and on paper) my levels, that is, how loud I listen to every project during mixing. Second one is, that I always match gain before send or insert and after, so that I only hear what that plugin or equipment is doing to a signal. Also, my mixing position is a bit far away from my computer screen so I don't really see exactly what values have my eqs, compressors and other plugins. This forces me to listen what I do and make my decisions that way.
