How do the pros make better songs?

Kinda odd title but what i mean is why are the pros so good at making good music in whatever genre.

For example i been doing this 1.5 years now and though my production etc is much better my songwriting and songs really are not developing much. Its like my chord progressions, bass and melodies often just sound the same now..

Obviously there is no magic answer, but even the deadmou5 etc were just guys in there room making average songs at first, at some point they make a classic...but how lol?

Re: How do the pros make better songs?

1.5 years is nothing, the pros usually don't come from nowhere, 5+ years experience (minimum) Nobody makes good music in the beginning

Try out different techniques, research deeper into musical theory and you can find "secrets" for example right now I'm studying Bach chorales (not because I want to make classical music) but I want to understand more about note modulation since he was basically the engineer behind western music.. check out the I, II, IV relationships, tonic and dominant, relative minor and major of chords and try apply this to whatever kind of melodies you want to make

Well its a problem I play guitar i cant play piano..not fast and without thought..I can dabble on piano if you know what i mean so often i use piano roll.

Sometimes i try chord patterns on guitar or melodies then put them in piano roll.

Re: How do the pros make better songs?

Ssome people are good at running, or playing a sport or whatever and some people are bad at playing sports. I suck at all forms of sportsball. Some people are good at music and others are bad at it. It's the same.

I wouldn't even say I have any natural talent at making music. But, I have played musical instruments in different styles since I was a wee lad. I've also been playing at making music using computers in some form or another since the early 90s.

All this adds up to me being able to make some pretty mediocre stuff.

I sure don't try to impress people with my sports skills, but I can still enjoy playing them with friends in recreational or beer type leagues. My expectations of what I am going to be able to do are realistic though.

My art/drawing skills are pretty horrid too.

yeh maybe i hit my peak?

Im same at most things though its like im pretty good at most things far better than the average person you meet on the street most often..

Who can play hendrix voodoo chile on guitar with eyes closed..i can and i can impress all my relatives and freinds..BUT then i can post video same thing on guitar forum and 100 replies about my slack play and bends etc etc...and i can see some others play on YT 100x better.

I can make dance music and wow my ignorant freinds who dont even know what a DAW is but then compared to Deadmou5 its absolute rubbish lol.

Same sports..I can play football with mates and score many goals and be amazing but i can go join a local amateur team and be worst player there.

I can play Call of duty and beat all my freinds with many kills but then go some clan battle and be worst player there lol

Its like yes i can do things and do them well compared to people i guess who have never tried to do them but im not really good at all lol.

Same applying to EDM though music is fun/hobby/creative pursuit not to be judged how good you are etc lol but if i listen to me its ok but just not feeling it compared to real famous artists out there

Re: How do the pros make better songs?

there's no peak you can hit with music, there is always space for improvement. talent is one thing but you know music is like a trade, you can continue to increase musical skill all the time (provided you at least understand harmony), it can even be compared to math, but you don't consciously always work out the math with music, it just comes natural at some point

sure it is or was fun/hobby but now its at point i feel my music been same last 6-12months so its not enjoyable as

1. I can in my mind create new things

2. Im listening to same music over and over.

So when learning it was new and exciting and fun but not so much now..Sure I have loadsa books and bookmarks to read on music theory and synthesis etc etc..But its not improving me much.

Gonna start trying to copy some of my favourite songs pattern/progression wise but change sounds/melodies etc..I done that before but i gonna dig hard into anyalsing the songs i like..hopefully that will get me out this rut

True i guess maybe ive lost a lot of my newbiew enthisiausm, at first its like wow fruity loops! Wow vst! wow Massive preset pack! wow a dirty bass! wow automated filters! Wow delay effects etc

Like a kid having a wet dream on xmas day lol...so much excitement and fun

But now i found and played with all my toys so much the nitty gritty off actually getting down to business and making a decent song is not as easily done as playing with the toys when i was discovering them.
