Re: Accidentally copying melodies

So one point it when you make a piece of music, and then you discover that it sounds similar to something.

Another point (I think OP is struggling with) is when you start to write something and you didn't like anything until you have something that sounds like other tune you already know.

Im having the same problem too very often btw

excuse me but, do you actually build melodies by chaining up notes without really knowing where you're going?

This is new to me and so far my process is most often put some drums then maybe chords...then i just pick a scale.

I play about in the scale for a few takes...keep playing until something pops in my head or i make something cool...Then i play about with this idea.

Once its recorded i look at the piano roll...then i decide upon listening to it how i can imporve it then i edit the piano roll.

That is my process atm.

Another one is just play some chords then play on guitar and try to make cool melody..then i transfer to piano and edit to make cooler etc

At first i guess i dotn know where im going but once i got my idea i guess i moreso know what sounds/notes im looking for next

Re: Accidentally copying melodies

So recognizable, but you must see that many many musics are having the same chord progressions , if you look at Pachabell CAnon in D , it is all over

Consider it a tribute, a quote, whatever. Unless you're just some musical genius what you're playing probably isn't exactly what's recorded. Or re-conceptualize the melody, make it your own.

I'm thinking about compiling an illustrated book of jaymsay quotes from this forum, publishing it and selling it in urban outfitters or something. I'll steal everyword he's written and capitalize on it.

Where can I pre order? In fact I should get a discount since I've already made a post somewhere on here which summarises some of his comments.

In my opinion you should stop worrying and overthinking so much (after reading through some of the threads you recently started) and just make music... You are at a point where your goal should simply be getting better so it shouldn't matter if the melody you found is similar or the same as another one... And even if it's the same meldoy you could still arrange it differently and make it a completely new song
Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

To add to that its a big thing in jazz as well. II-V-I progressions are the back bone. And most people use very similar licks and patterns in their solo's. Hell, one of my death metal friends re purposes licks and adjusts them to his own soloing here and there. Its ye olde sampling almost.

You can encompass the same melody in different chords and make it sound completely unique.

The more one tries to be "original", usually the shittier their music becomes, or the more pretentious. Originality should come with experience and just through the natural process.

Start copying melodies on purpose. Problem solved, you're not longer accidentally copying melodies!
