new inspirations from classic artists

i'm an aspiring producer that has been working on music for about a year now and am trying to to broaden my musical scope from a strictly edm perspective to a more varied taste. I have to admit i really don't know a whole lot about techno or pretty much anything out of progressive house and i fucking hate to admit that. What i want to do is start to shape my sound by listening to older more influential artists that might not be i don't know current anymore. I'm only 19 so i wasn't really around for like detroit techno or jungle or any of the first styles of electronic music so i really don't know where to look when it comes to finding more influences. What i'm here to ask is there any artists in electronic music that i absolutely must delve into to get a greater understanding of electronic music as a whole ? I know it might be a completely subjective question but what i'm really looking for are the big innovators at the time if you catch my drift. Any suggestions will do.

Re: new inspirations from classic artists

i think a combination between those already said 'the modern avant garde'
and the original classics;

Wagner,
Tchaikovsky
Rachmanninov
Shostakovich
Bach
Chopin
Beethoven
Lizst

etc
etc

there's so much source of melodic/harmonic inspiration in the works of these guys within each piece to last an EDM artist an eternity.

combine this and the avant garde sound design of these modern artists and youll have something fantastic.

Re: new inspirations from classic artists

funny you should say that i've been in this music appreciation course in college for the past couple months and it got me interested in bach's fugues and now i've become obsessed with them
