Re: Guitars and things with strings.

My Dad just gifted me his Gibson L5 Custom Wes Montgomery edition.
Looks like it's from 2002, so not crazy old or anything but still worth about ten times as much as any other guitar I've ever owned, not that I'll ever sell it.
This thing sounds amazing plugged in or acoustic, it's very inspirational.

Re: Guitars and things with strings.

fuck that looks beautiful. Still hankering after a big beautiful jazzbox-type guitar...But won't be able to play bebop on it

Enjoy and keep it, it's a quality family heritage (y)

Amazing!

I think it's likely built by James "Hutch" Huchins. It'll have his signature on the label in the f hole.

He was the last Gibson employee that was in Kalamazoo in the '50s and went with the company to Nashville. He was the only person building the arch tops in the Nashville custom shop. His guitars are desirable and his passing truly marked the end of an era.

They actually stopped making arch tops for about a year after he left because no one else knew how. Congrats on the guitar.

Time to learn some Joe pass

Pretty cool. Although torpedo live is getting a firmware update that will allow multi micing sim, so the competition is gonna be tough for the ox.

Re: Guitars and things with strings.

A couple partcasters I put together. The first is really nice to play. Light, thin body. Took a bit of work fitting the electronics. It's very open and bright.

The second is nicer looking, walnut over pine. It's a bit dull sounding. Open high strings don't ring so well. But I'm glad to have it.

That is a great idea.
Also, just seen a used slim-bodied resonator on Gumtree that wants to be my summer camping companion.

Lol, thx.
I actually have an ep worth OS stuff I am planning on putting out sooner or later. But after that I have a few tracks in the works, but for the most part I am planning on just playing a lot, and improving my guitar chops for a bit, without really trying to make music.

Re: Guitars and things with strings.

#justguitarthings

So I unintentionally picked up some 7 string pickups for next to nothing - an SD Sentient/Nazgul set, apparently real heavy metal shit. I've been enjoying playing and recording my cheap-ass ebay scored Schecter Omen-7, but the pickups have always been muddy and lacking definition and string separation. I figured I'd throw the new ones in and see if they make a difference, if not I can always swap back and sell them on.

Ridiculous person that I am, I figured while I was tearing everything apart I'd go ahead and wire in some push/pull pots for parallel and splits - zero idea how it'll sound, but both the new pickups are 4 wire so I figured might as well try it. I'm betting the Sentient at least sounds pretty sweet with a split.

Since I was having to basically strip everything off and it was about time for a string change, I thought I might as well clean and buff/polish the body and neck and oil the hardware and do a proper setup on it. I sort of eyeballed it when I got it, but this is probably the best chance I'll have to really dial it in and clean it up (it was absolutely disgusting when I got it - sweat baked onto the body, chewing gum on a tuning peg, etc).

And that's how my 30 minute pickup swap has turned into a multi-day project on a guitar I paid less than $150 for. It's the musical equivalent of putting 22s on a Pinto. Hopefully it's worth it.

Re: Guitars and things with strings.

Done messing around with this guy!
Lots of cool improvements, locking tuners are great.
New fishman fluence classic pickups sound amazing, shout out again to @[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
for sorting that out!
Some vanity additions too, like the pick guard and black pickup rings.
Definitely very stoked on this guitar!

On a different note, am I the only one that gets this and the amp thread confused?
Could we merge them into a massive guitar thread a la hardware mega thread?

Not to be anticlimatic, but it'll probably look a lot like a guitar. I'll get some shots up when I'm done.

So it ends up that what I figured for a bit of hardened shmutz is actually clouding in the top coat. I'm guessing the previous owner rubbed it with acetone or similar in an attempt to clean it, or spilled something boozy on it and didn't wipe it up. That means I'll have to sand it out and refinish it, which is more than I'm interested in doing right now since it doesn't affect the tone or leave the house. Disappointing, but so it goes.

The other hink was that the pickups didn't fit. Like 1/8" too long on the wings. At first I was all "get me the dremel", then I remembered that the pickups are worth more than the guitar, so it was wood chisels and files and a bit of hammering. It turned out fine - the pickup rings will cover it anyway.

I've got a bit of soldering left to do, then on to the setup.
